Some people say that 'big boned' doesn't exist, that it just depends on how much muscle or fat is on someone's body that gives it the basic shape. But some people are very wide & large framed & aren't fat at all, so I don't get it? Isn't there a difference between being fat & big-boned?

Yeah, there is.

Being big/heavy boned shouldn't be used as an excuse for being too 'fat', but it certainly is a legitimate reason for some people who might be 10lb-15lb overweight, but look slimmer compared to other people of the same weight and height as them.

HTH : )

I think there is such a thing as big boned because I am one of them. Once I read an article that said to measure the elbow from the outside bones. I don't remember the exact measurements but mine is in the " large person" area...My Bones weigh 125!!! lol

Yes, there's a difference between being fat and big boned. There's also a difference between being overweight and over fat. People should look more at body composition (the percentage of body weight that is comprised of fat) when evaluating their fitness, instead of the amount they weigh. Many underweight people carry too much fat on their frames, just as many cut body builders would be "overweight" on the height/weight tables.

interestingly, sometimes i see people with really different ankle bones. some have really skinny ankle bones and others have really thick ones...so, maybe there is such a thing as "big boned" but that encircling wrist is not really true. i have really short fingers. i use to be really skinny and at that time, my wrists were very skinny (because there is not fat around it) and i was able to encircle my wrist but when i gained weight, the additional fat (not bone but the excess fat) on my wrist made my wrist look bigger. so, gaining weight is the factor, not the bone (on the wrist anyways). i've never known anyone gaining weight on the ankles thoughs so maybe someone should measure ankles, not wrists...

Yes there are big boned people. Using your middle finger and thumb encircle your wrist. If you can just touch then you are a meduim frame if you can touch with room left your a small frame if you cannot touch you are a large frame or big boned Hope this helps

You can usually tell if you're big boned, if you can wrap your thumb and middle finger around your wrist, you aren't. If you can't wrap your fingers around then you are.

Because most people who are obese will still have normal sized wrists.

I like Cartman from southpark, not only does he used big boned as an excuse but "i'm not fat, i just have a sweet hockey body" and at chrissie n holiday time "i'm not fat, i'm festively plump" and to be politically correct "i'm not fat, i have a different lifestyle choice"

Some people have larger frames and larger bones, but you can tell the difference between just a person with a larger frame and a person with a lot of fat on them. Usually people who claim to be "big boned" are just fat.

yes, there is such thing as "big boned". when a person has a larger body frame/bones, then their weight is held differently than on people with smaller frames. most of the time, they weigh more because of their bone and muscle mass if they are in shape.

a lot of times when a person is overweight, they say that they are "big boned" when sometimes they are not. big boned is not the same thing as being overweight or obese.

Here is how you manually measure your own frame. Using one of your hands ( the thumb and the tallest finger), try to put two fingers completely around (touching) the bones of your opposite wrist. SMALL frame: fingers will overlap. MEDIUM frame: fingers will comfortably touch. LARGE frame: fingers will NOT touch. This method is relative to everyone's own body. Your hand with not work on anyone else's wrist, only your own.
