This hilarious. All these atheists claiming to have no malice toward religion, and yet they flood the religion category with vicious attacks over and over again. What dismal hypocrisy. How odd too that they insist over and over again that some never-identified Christian church is "trying" to "force their beliefs" on them, but they never say how, where or when. One of the above even admonishes us not to "try to legislate" his beliefs. What on earth is this man talking about? He thinks someone is "trying" to secretly legislate his beliefs. I don't think I've ever met an atheist who didn't (1) forcefully attempt to push his views on me;( 2) followed by an attack on what he presumes without asking to be my views; and (3) most relevant to the above, insists over and over again all sorts of unnamed entities are allegedly trying to "force" him to convert to Christianity AGAINST HIS WILL! (gasp!). These sad tales of attempted forced conversion - always lacking specifics as to circumstances - are obviously the product of their imagination, since among other things such actions would be illegal in the first place. They're just talking their usual line of balderdash. Anyone who reads this category knows perfectly well who is "pushing" whose views - and on whom.

Why can I only marry one woman at a time in the US?
If I am gay, why do I get so much grief about wanting to get married or adopt children?
Why is it that embryonic stem cell research, which can potentially save many lives by using stem cells with properties adult stem cells do not have, has severely limited funding?
Why is it that years ago slavery, and then prejudice against blacks was rationalized through the Bible, much like prejudice against homosexuals is done today?
I'll tell you why. Because us atheists have given you guys a free ride for too long. When the president of the United States says he went to war because God told him so, it has gone too far.
You can believe anything you want. If it makes you happy, I'm all for it. But don't impose your beliefs, or allow others to impose their beliefs, on the governmental system and thereby on other people. I don't care about your God, and yet I clearly remember getting a detention as a child when I didn't say the pledge of allegiance, or refused to say the "under God" part (true story... after I realized what the words actually meant).

The reality is that I don't. The problem lies in the directive from the Bible to preach the Word of God and covert people to Christianity. Obviously, I'm a critic of religion. But I'm also realistic about the chances of people leaving whatever religion they grew up with and believe in, so I try to keep it at an "agree to disagree" level. Inevitably, someone thinks they are doing me a favor by preaching to me or inviting me to their Church or trying to engage me in why I believe what I believe. Then people get defensive because of a perceived slight and the whole matter becomes personal. There are always people that are nasty on both sides of the aisle, so I'm discounting the chuckleheads and recounting my typical experience dealing with individuals of the faith. I don't think I've ever walked away from a religious conversation without feeling like Christians are simply incredulous that anyone can be a non-Christian.

I do not oppose your religion in the public sense. Preach whatever you like, so long as you do not violate the rights of anyone else. This is known as democratic tolerance.
Live and let live.
But on a personal level, I debate every religion and what they claim is reality. I especially take issue with "faith," and the idea that religion should not be evaluated by evidence. I also oppose religion that restricts natural sexual behaviors or encourages bigotry. I especially take issue when groups resort to lying about science, by denying evidence for evolution or the age of the universe.
These kinds of problems have a large impact on society because they reinforce prejudice and inhibit critical thinking and free inquiry. In the case of stem cell research, they can hold back medical advances.
So on a personal level, I will debate them. But I also to believe that you have a right to practice whatever you want. I value the U.S. Bill of Rights. I will not approve of any law that violates your freedom as an individual.
Just don't use our government to force your religion onto me, or the institutions I finance (public schools, buildings, government).
I do not force my atheism onto anyone else, only argue my position in the public square. I ask for the same courtesy.

Quite frankly, most atheists don't, they would just like you to know there's other options open to you and the nature of the world we live in indicates things a certain way.
But for the atheists that do care, it's more out of concern for you for the effort you're spending doing something that they see as irrational and silly. Imagine there was something in the world that you saw as a great tragedy that happened from a series of misunderstandings, imagine this tragedy effecting the lives of billions up until this day... Would you not try to do you part to correct this misunderstanding as you perceived it so people could go on with their lives?... It seems like the compassionate thing to do. Do you only do good things because it might effect where you're going?... o.O

I don't care if anyone else believes in God. In fact, I'd stand up and fight for your right to believe in God, and wish you all the happiness in the world in doing so.
I just want to be treated with the same respect. I want people to keep THEIR religious beliefs out of our schools and government. I want them to get rid of laws saying that an atheist can't hold public office. I want them to get rid of blue laws, that tell ME what I can buy on what days based on other people's religious beliefs. I want small, pushy messages like "In God We Trust" taken off our government-issued currency. I want people to be as horrified at a presidential candidate saying "I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots." as they are by any other prejudiced comment against ANY people.

So why don't we not believe in god? I never got an answer for that. Secondly I don't care what you believe as long as you, as Zhukov said, don't push it on me and try to convert me. If you leave us alone and stop teling us we're going to hell which we are most definetly NOT afraid of, then we would leave you alone. But the second you threaten us we are going to defend ourselves.

good question... I'm not an athiest but I know several ppl who are. I don't think it's much about the whole caring, I mean my friends never said a word but I guess it's when ppl try to convince them to convert that's when they get offensive.
It depends mostly on the person and the situation really.

Because you try to change laws and push your values on others which makes you not just crazy but dangerous.
I don't care if you believe in God, and I wouldn't wish your religious POV to be forced on anybody, especially through the law system

The problem is when leaders of our country make stupid decisions on our behalf because they think they heard something from a higher being. You can go believe in whatever you want. Great Pumpkin - whatever.
