It doesn't matter to me if it has money in it already. If I feel the service deserved the tip, into the jar the money will go!

When there is SOME money in it. All I've ever done is wait table so I've thought about tipping more than you know, haha. I've always gotten my tips off the table, but on days when I ran the cash register for extra money I found it yielded a little more in tips when the jar had some money in it, but not a lot. Kind of like when I was a little kid and would put a pillowcase in the car and after I went to a couple houses transfer most of it to the pillowcase. Then go back trick-or-treating with a small/moderate amount of candy in my basket. (I always came home with 1 or 2 pillowcases full).

If a person has the money it should go in the tip jar regardless because the service has been the same for you as everyone else and they should deserve the tip, if the service was to your satisfaction of course. But what do I know, I live in Australia and we don't tip because we believe that, that is the persons job and they are paid to do it.

Probably if it already has money in it...But I don't ever put money in tip jars unless I've just gotten like 6 cents in change. Tips should be for good service, not just for doing your job.

Neither! If the server has performed satisfactorily, I will acknowledge the service and hand a tip to the person. Tip jars tell me that we are EXPECTED to leave something, even if the service was poor!

Tip jars are a crock, as a rule. If you are an actual server bringing food to my table and busing it, fine. If we're at a buffet and you're refilling my drink and bringing me new plates, fine.
But if you just have some coffee can with a handwritten label that says TIPS, and I am self-busing my table...dream on.
