This is a home study course in digital photography and appears to be very thorough. I understand they have been around for along time. I just would like to know if anyone has had experience with them, and if it would be worth it for me to enroll?

I wouldn't say it's crap. Maybe rather basic. I have seen the course materials for the film school a couple of years ago. Covered topics pretty well. You send in assignments and get critiqued by their instructors. Like any mail order school, what you get out of it depends in great part what you put into it.

Not sure what their tuition is now. For a pure beginner, the course would probably be worth it. If you've been snapping a few years and reading photo magazines, then you should already know a lot of the material covered. The good thing would be getting feedback. Of course, you can enroll in a college class or maybe find a photography mentor to do the same thing.

Good luck!

dont do it. it's crap. i had requested information from them several years ago and that is NOT the way to learn. you need to get into a class or get a job as an assistant to a photographer. if you are on a tight budget and live in the city or at least in NY state...then i would suggest looking into FIT (fashion institute of technology) it's a SUNY school and it's a good and affordable one at that and they are an internationally known art school. you can even take adult education courses without having to register for other classes. good luck and stay away from the NY institute of photography.

I've heard of them. I remember seeing their ads in photo mags back in the '80s. Later, I actually met a photographer who took the course. He seemed to be doing okay for himself. He had a studio and customers anyway. I didn't know him very well, as I was just applying for a job with him that I didn't get. I eventually got a job working for one of his competitors in town, who didn't take the course, but inherited his studio from his father.
