LCD is a liquid sandwiched between two translucent metal plates. When very small electrical energy is applied, the liquid changes state and becomes translucent to non-translucent.

Plasma is similar to neon lights. Two electrodes are enclosed in nearly vacuum chamber with small amount of gas. When high voltage is applied, they glow.

Plasma display consumes far more electrical power but is brighter. Plasma is prone to burn-in where image can be permanently etched where as LCD is not.

LCD is liquid crystal so the picture that you see on your comp right now is the quality that you will get on your screen. Plasma is better but much more expensive and if it gets hit, the plasma gets a permanent red dot and you will have to buy a new one.
