I'm traveling to Rome and would like to stay someplace with a relatively cheap hotel and also near the nightlife - bars, restaurants, nightclubs. Any recommendations?

I stayed at the Hotel Mariano while I was in Italy. It was near the Termini so every bus and subway was less than 3 blocks away. It was clean, cheap and newly remodeled. As for being close - everything is close. You can get just about anywhere for less than a 1/2 hour on the bus or subway.

The center of Rome is small so you will be able to walk from one area to the other and sample what each have to offer in terms of nightlife....

The small streets around the Spanish Steps
>for a chic aperitivo at one of the terraces
>if you manage dinner at Fiaschetteria ($$)
>lunch at Gusto ($)

Campo dei Fiori
>for aperitivo at one of the terraces
>fondue dinner? go to La Taverna di Lucifero ($$)
>nightclub: La Maison

Trastevere for trendy bars
>Freni e Frizioni - the coolest bar at the moment (http://www.freniefrizioni.com/ not a very good website though...)

Testaccio for nightclubs (you'll need a cab for this one)
> head for Goa amongst many others all concentrated in this area slightly outside of the center
