I just called and got summoned to serve jury duty. I know that there is a waiting room where you have to wait for a long time. Can I bring a friend to keep me company just in the waiting room?

Not in my county. We can't even talk in the waiting areas. Take a good book or magazine.

What country?
In Can. I've been called twice and one time I brought my daughter. For the selection itself, she had to sit in the spectators section. The waiting room was in the hallway outside the courtroom. We waited in the hallway for about 2 hours.
It is possible that for high profile or multiple defendant trials or other such reason , the holding of prospective jurrers could be done out of sight of spectators which would not include your friend.
