I own a transmission shop, and know a lot about them. Changing it wouldn't hurt anything, but I can't stress enough to customers, "Do what the owners manual says" when it comes to maintenance of your vehicle. I did see one answer that was correct, and they said 80,000 miles. Yes sir, that person knows what they are talking about. If you will check that information against your owners manual, you will see that they are right. The one exception would be if you have been doing a lot of heavy towing. The one sure way to tell is; look at the fluid. If it is brown and not red, it needs it. Just like motor oil that is very black, the transmission fluid will turn to a brown color when it gets used up. It will also develope a different smell to it when its gone bad. People can argue till the cows come home over when to change the fluid, but why guess when they give you an owners manual with all the correct information in it? Change the fluid & filter, and you will feel better about it. There is no changing it too much, except maybe the cost of having it done.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

A lot of people recommend NOT changing automatic transmission fluid, especially if the vehicle has high mileage. They say that it doesn't really get dirty like engine oil, because it's a closed environment, unlike the engine, and therefor really doesn't need it. They say that changing it loosens up deposits and causes problems. I can say that my dad never changes his and has had no transmission problems in many high-mileage cars, but he drives his cars easy. Is 49,000 miles high? I would call it borderline, but that's just my guesstimation.

I'd check it and see if it is black if not then you should be okay you may want to change the filter at the same time since I think you have to pull the pan down to change the fluid. I could be wrong on this though I know most don't have a drain cock on them

i believe gm recommends that you change the transmission fluid at 50,000 miles, and yes, personally i would change it. you are not too far from due, and just to keep it running that way, go by the maintenance schedule in the owners guide.

If you want to do it the right way and make sure all the fluid is gone then you wil want to remove the transmission pan and change the filter also while you got then pan off.or just take it to the shop.

You didn't mention which engine you have, but I would recommend having it changed - and changing all of it, including what's in the transfer case (which means using the trans fluid flush machine - Part of it depends where you're driving - if out West you can probably get another 25k miles out before you need it.

It has extended life fluid in the trans.
You could go at least 80000 miles before you change the fluid.
