i get this A LOT, and i've never found a "proper" or 'miss-manners-friendly" response. i usually respond with an "umm.... thanks?" , which usually just leads to an akward silence, or i just start explaining how not all (or most for that matter) mexicans are short and tan, which i think makes me sound a little too condescending.

I know that type of situation can be infuriating. Since you're asking for a polite response, I'll suggest this: just smile and inform them that people of mexican heritage are actually pretty diverse. You don't have to go into detail and sound condescending, just leave it at that. If they ask for more information, you can give it to them, and you could end up educating someone who wasn't meaning to be rude, but just didn't know better.

As for the other replies who encourage you to make a smart-a** or hot-tempered remark back, keep in mind that that kind of reaction could just reinforce a negative stereotype about mexicans.

i've got observed that a superb form of tutor Border collies have longer hair. whilst herding, it truly is greater helpful for them to have shorter hair, for my section (and in many others), by fact it would not get tangled in long grass, that's less difficult to maintain neat, etc. yet I even have seen a pair medium length coat Border collies herding, in simple terms none with an extremely long tutor length coat. when you consider that all people so a techniques has stated that... that rather means no longer something, haha. Or like what Mutter stated. some tutor BCs are bred for seems, herders are bred for intelligence (it rather is wise, in case you inquire from me. the only dogs tutor breeders ever look to offer are classically marked black and white, fluffy BCs. the reason the breed is so smart is they have on no account been bred for seems, it rather is why they are in a position to be any shade under the solar, could have any coat length, and actually have a tremendously extensive weight variety for a smaller scale medium sized breed), and so it truly is argued that tutor breeders are ruining the breed. Or i think with banned coloring specifically breeds. The "silver" lab probable has the aptitude to be a great hunter if knowledgeable appropriate, however the coloring means no shows for them. that's form of any incorrect way around nonetheless. upload: or i think the AmStaff is a powerful occasion. in accordance to a pair people who spoke back my question the former day, the Amstaff and the APBT began by fact the comparable breed, however the Amstaff had the "pastime" look bred out of it so it may be tutor high quality. So tremendously lots each and every seen difference between Amstaffs and APBTs are for tutor...

When my husband (who was mixed but had a hispanic surname) was alive I used to get this when people met him - one even said "Oh, thank God, I thought you were married to a greasy Mexican!" - I too didn't have a good comeback for such stupidity and rude comments. Years later - now - I'd say : "I know you are not intentionally being rude but that's a very insensitive comment. Please don't say such racist comments around me in the future." The person might be offended but then so was I - and so are you. Don't let them off the hook because they need to be educated. I wouldn't hold it against them - especially if an apology is forthcoming and they don't say/do anything racist in future.

Tell them they don't look American or whatever nationality they are.....they'll probably get pissed and start telling you not everyone in their race/nationality looks a certain way, blah, blah, blah...then smile, and say, "Yeah, I know...Not all Mexicans look the same either".

P.S. I and a lot of my Mexican friends get this, too. I even get "you don't act Mexican". Have no idea what the heck that means.

I know this remark all too well, and my response to it is, "Really?" I do not take it as a compliment, because it is neither a compliment nor a slur; it is only a show of the person's limited experience with people of different races. I just change the subject with no further response.

The proper response is a shocked look. Followed by a change of subject.

A gentler version of Seij D's answer is also good: "I guess you haven't met many Mexicans".

It's possible that people are just blunt and don't know how to act around human beings. I think you're handling it perfectly.

If someone is going to say that you don't *look* like a certain ethnicity then they obviously have a preexisting notion of how members of said ethnicity should appear and that notion needs to be respectfully destroyed.

My response would be "Well...What is a Mexican supposed to look like?" That's just pure ignorance. Let them know it's offensive, and walk away.

If its a woman .. Ask her when she is due(works especially well if she is not pregnant)
If a guy...comment nicely about the bald spot on the back of his head..Then walk away mumbling something in Spanish.
Good luck

How about, "But I am. It's true. I guess you'll just have to redefine what a Mexican looks like."

Or, whisper "Sssssshhh... I'm going incognito today."

Or even just, "I am. It's the truth."
