If you are suffering from clinical depression, which it sounds like, because of the prolonged nature of it (4 years is a long time) -- no matter how many vitamins or herbals you take, or walks you do... is going to cure you.
There is no such thing as "best"... everyone has a different make up. If you have had a close family member suffering from it.. try first what they are on. That often works well, because of the shared chemicals. It is mostly trial and error.
I have heard from friends, Effexor works well. Keeps you energized, and in high spirits. The trouble, like all anti-depressants for males, is sexual drive decrease. It's not THAT bad, if you are worrying, from the point of a woman! lol Been with men taking it, and, they make too much out of it.
I personally would say, stay away from Prozac if anything.

SSRI's (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) ie Zoloft, Prozac, are the high-quality. they're given extra frequently now adays considering the fact that they've the least quantity of SE(part results) then the opposite anti depressants. Some of the SE that the SSRI's have are insomnia so take them within the morning rather of at night time, and sexual disturbances corresponding to behind schedule orgasm. However, just like the leisure of the antidepressants it's going to take approximately four weeks to begin having healing outcome, however will exhibit SE earlier than then.

Were you diagnosed by a doctor, and checked for thyroid function, and is it clinical (severe) depression? If neither, keep prescription medication as a last alternative, trying the following first: Practise for 15 - 20 mins daily, the method at http://www.dbtselfhelp.com/ or gaze at a burning candle in a quiet, darkened room for 20 mins; acknowledge stray thoughts, and gently redirect focus to the process. Maximum results with either come from using 3 times daily, some hours apart. Work up slowly to 30 - 60 mins of vigorous daily exercise, preferably in sunlight, eat healthily, and keep occupied. Take a vitamin B complex, and 4 fish oil supplements, daily. Arctic root (healthfood stores) comes highly recommended; Passiflora & Lemon Balm are alternatives. St. John's Wort is popular for moderate depression, but it can affect other medications, so tell your doctor. See http://www.beattheblues.info/? Phone: (800) 826 3632 .Social anxiety: Drink chamomile or sleepytime tea (don't drive until you know how it affects you). Use the method at http://deeplyrelax.com or breathe in to the count of 8, hold to the count of 4, exhale to the count of 8; repeat 3 or 4 times. No coffee, caffeine products, or white sugar (honey, or sweetener is preferable). See http://www.socialanxietysupport.com/ & http://www.socialphobiaworld.com/ (.com/modules.php) Doctors and psychiatrists feel pressured by their patients to prescribe medication, and the multibillion psychopharmaceutical industry encourages them in this. They don't tell you that studies show that, for non clinical depression, with no physiological cause, antidepressants are little more effective than a placebo (sugar pill), that therapy, alone, is just as good as medication, alone. Or that there may be side effects, including sexual dysfunction. See http://www.anxiety-and-depression (-depression solutions.com) Consider seeing a psychologist, or getting a second opinion.

it sounds like anxiety meds would be better if that's what your experiencing. i take celexa but, it's for depression.it's worked well for me. i had the usual lack of interest in sex when i first started it but, that's gone now. it really doesn't matter what anyone hear has been on. a good dr is good at deciding which med will work for you b/c they work in different ways for different things. tell him exactly what your feeling. be totally honest. only then can he give you the right meds for you. good luck.

clean diet, exercise, good sleep, laughter, elimination of any behavioral causes of depression, and clean living
It's not a flashy answer, but they have all been proven to work and there are no medical side effects.
