Sin is “any want of conformity unto or transgression of the law of God” (1Jo_3:4; Rom_4:15), in the inward state and habit of the soul, as well as in the outward conduct of the life, whether by omission or commission (Rom_6:12-17; Rom_7:5-24). Sin is not a mere violation of the law of our constitution, nor of the system of things, but an offense against a personal lawgiver and moral governor who vindicates his law with penalties.

God forgives all sins except the one sin that denies Him. This sin ascribes to God what Satan has done, in that a person blasphemes the Spirit God that has been sent to call a person to righteousness. By saying with full knowledge "I do not believe", a person has in effect participated in the very first lie told in Eden.

Taking one’s own life is an offense against God, the Giver of all life. But suicide is no greater a sin as any other sin. If a person is truly saved, God will forgive this sin, too, just as He forgives other sins of those who claim the "credit" given them by the atoning sacrifice of Christ.

Some denominations of Christianity believe that people who commit suicide are not murderers of themselves but victims of a mental illness that killed them much like a physical disease can. In that case, the victim is not to blame for the suicide and is able to get into Heaven. You'd have to talk to a clergy member of his church if you want to know what they believe on the matter, because not all denominations of Christianity share the same belief on this issue.

Those who are adamant that a person who takes his life is committing a mortal sin, and will go to hell, are basing their belief on church doctrine rather than on the Bible. Scripture is silent on the subject. There are no verses that say "He who takes his own life shall be damned." According to Scripture, only one sin does not have forgiveness, and that is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit (see Mark 3:29 ). That means there is forgiveness for every other sin.

Some quote 1 Corinthians 3:17, which says that God will destroy someone who "defiles" the temple of the Holy Spirit. Yet, there is disagreement about what it means to defile the temple. Does this include suicide? Does it include illicit drug abuse (slow suicide), prescription drug abuse, cigarettes (deliberately breathing in poisons that will eventually kill), tattoos, over-eating (digging a grave with your spoon), or alcohol abuse?

God forbid that we add to the pain of someone who has lost a loved one through the tragedy of suicide, by making a judgment about their eternal destiny. God is the ultimate Judge, and we should therefore leave the issue in His hands. It would be wise to follow the biblical example and not come to any verdict in the case of suicide.

Can you forgive him anyhow?

Whether Heaven and Hell exist or not.

He is dead so that part of it is over.

No matter what you think of what the man did there is nothing that will change it.

Would you rather think of him as having found forgiveness and peace in Heaven?

Then so be it.

Edit; I am so impressed by the loving and forgiving nature the Christians are showing.(sarcasm, dripping thick, with a sneer)
Only Riku seems to get it right among the religious.

No one but God can answer your question because ultimately, He is the One Who decides a soul's destiny. We know that He is compassionate and merciful, so He loves the person who committed suicide even more than we can imagine possible. Know that the person is in His hands and that no matter what happens, it will all be for the best.

I'm sorry for your loss, and I'm even sorrier for your mother-in-law's loss because there is unfinished business between her and her husband. I'll pray for you, her, and your family.

can they? maybe. the Bible doesn't actually say yes or no. taking a life is a sin, but of course, God will forgive those who repent to Him. if he was out of his mind when he did it, he'll likely be forgiven. but of course, repentance is limited to earth....

I'd say God can forgive anything (blasphemy against the Holy Spirit has a continual verb tense where you never accept Christ), so likely they can go.but suicide isn't a guranteed free ticket, so don't chance it.

Well a person that commits a suicide could go to heaven if the person say to God that he is sorry for what he did and God would take care of it. Just pray and hope.

Once saved, always saved...

John 6:35-40:
35Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. 36But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."

Romans 8:38-39:
38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Jesus never sends us away from Him, and nothing can ever separate us from Him. Not even ourselves. No sin, suicide included is too powerful that God has not forgiven it by the blood of the Lamb.

Jesus died once for ALL sins... This means He knew what sins you would commit, including the taking of your own life and He still died for it. He loves us past, present, and future, and for all eternity.

If a person walks into a burning building full of paint or explosives knowing it can explode it is suicide. If the person believes they can rescue someone in the building, it is not suicide.

NO- and I'm very sorry for your father-in law and what he caused to your family. Unforgiveness is very serious. Make sure you forgive him so it does not harm you also.
