She got spayed about two weeks ago and she needed to go back for a checkup 10 days after. I had to drop her off there for 8 hours and pick her up after school. She's known how to sit for months now on command, but ever since that check-up, she will NOT sit on command anymore. I may be paranoid, but I'm guessing the other dogs at the drop-off area got to her...? Do I have to re-teach her how to sit?

*Thanks for all the answers! Let me clarify some things though - she always sat on command even right after the surgery, and no signs of discomfort or infections in the surgery area. It was AFTER the drop-off at the vet (a week after surgery) when she stopped sitting...and her behavior is kinda different.

If infection is not cause that makes her refuse to sit, then maybe its the people at the vets clinic rather then the dogs there.

Your dog will sit on command because you, the owner is giving her the orders. If its someone who she dont know, she will not react immediately. When that happens, the person who issue the command will give her the command to sit again.

Once that happen for more then two times, the word "sit" will not become a command anymore. As she will know that she will not be reprimanded for not following orders thus causing the command "sit" to be white noise to her.

You don't have to retrain her to sit. What you need to do is to let her remember the word "sit" as a command. When you say sit and she doesn't, Gently but firmly push her butt down. Repeat this for a few times and the word "sit" will come back to her. Remember, praise her alot.

She's messing with you.. Dogs always go thru a phase where they pretend that they haven't a clue what you are talking about, and suddenly have no idea what anything means, and some of them even pretend to be deaf.

Have you ever seen a dog on the surgery table when they are there to be spayed? They are laying on their back and legs tied down to keep them from sliding or moving. It's likely that her hips are bothering her after being in that position for a length of time. It's also possible that she has a hip problem and the surgery aggravated it.

Everything people are saying are good advice -
you might be pushing her
pushing her early
she may have an infection
it may hurt

but keep in mind that dogs think differently than people. you must repeat the steps of taining above in many different positions and places in order to get your dog to know what the true meaning of "sit" is.

this has some good advice:

http://www.loveyourdog.com/sit.html

when you tarin a dog, the dog sees the whole picture of the training. it's you training him to sit at that particular place, in a certain way, and even at a certain time (it's dark it's light, no one else is home...whatever) so you need to be consistent with that till he gets good, and then add one thing, keep chaning up, after awhile the dog will learn that sit is sit anywhere, with distractions, with noises, with cats to chase.

Then guess what, you'll have to go through that with down. After awhile, the learning curve will smooth out, and all will get easier.

I would say look at her stomach and make sure she does not have an infection in the area she was spayed at. She is probably just still a bit tender down there, and is having trouble with sitting down while it heals. Watch her closely and if she seems to be having a lot of trouble that is continuing, take her to the vet. But be absolutely sure to try to check her stomach and make sure she is ok where the surgery site was. If that is all it is, is a bit of tenderness, she is just sore and she will be fine, just have to give her a bit of time to heal and she will be back to normal. Best of luck,

At the vet she would have been kept in her own cage, I don't think other dogs could get to her.
Is she different in any other way? More nervous, skittish? Does she still obey other commands?
Anyway, if you have to re-teach her, she will learn much faster than the first time.

You should not have to re-teach her.... You'll just need to REMIND her what she's supposed to be doing. Most dogs will never forget their commands if properly trained and if you keep up with it. Do just what you did when you first started training her. Whether it's using a corrective collar, clicker training, or simply positive reinforcement. Chances are, she forgot because her training was not kept up with, not because she was around the other dogs. She'll remember what "sit" means very quickly, and if you keep at it, telling her to sit randomly every day and rewarding her for doing so, she wont forget it. Good luck.

After I got my dog spade, she did the same thing but I just gave her some time and encouraged her when she did start to sit again (oddly though, she modified her sit and now she sits kinda on her hip instead of her bottom and I cant break her of it... Atleast she's sitting).

Your asking alot of your girl right after surgery. She is probably still uncomfortable in that area from the spraying. Give her another week or so to get fully recouperate from the surgery.

She may have been told to sit then had something negative happen to her, so she is now scared to sit. Start reteaching it, praising her for the correct behaviour. Once she does it once and gets a yummy cookie, I'm sure it will come back to her really quickly. Good luck!

I don't know what you mean by "they got to her" ( like, the other dogs talked her out of obeying??)
but I would take a look at her belly and her rear. It's very possible she has a sore or a cut or something that makes it uncomfortable to sit. check it out
