p.s. since it`s an agree/disagree question, why do you give thumbs-down just because you don`t agree with *my* opinion?

Human beings are so complex and there are so many of us that we meet in a life time that it would be impossible to get to know all of them. Stereotyping provides a standard response so that we are at least able in some way to understand the strangers, of which most of us are. I lived near the Canadian American border Peace Arch for 10 years in the 80's, holidayed in America and popped over the border quite frequently. From meeting Americans I believed them to be an essentially warm and kind hearted people. My best friend was an American, RIP. However, since being on this webb site my view of Americans has changed to become quite negative since I've seen alot of nasty and ignorant examples. I once thought I'd like to live in America remembering my past experiences, I also have quite a few cousins there, but now I'm not even sure I'd want to visit and if I did I would be extremely cautious.

Indeed, while no man is an island, archipelagoes are nonetheless easily lumped under single nation states. Think of the woes of the varied ethnicities in a place like Indonesia.

Better it would be, to be Pitcairn or Easter, though even they are grouped with Britain and Chile, respectively. Those Pitcairners got a bit out of control with regards to their youngsters, and the Crown didn't like it too much. When you're British, you need to do what the British do.

Thus it goes, with being socked into a collective. But ultimate sovereignty--well, it's a bit scary, for with it goes far too much responsibility. Most of us opt for typecasting, for it makes it easier to know just what to do next.

When people begin to break down learned fears and stereotypes will people then begin to understand we are all the same on the inside. It sounds cliche, but it's the damn truth. We all wear these mask and perform this song and dance because it's what we think is appropriate. I say f*#k appropriate and your fake smile. If everyone acted liike the real person they were, we would all finally understand we are all the same. I'm no better then you and likewise.

Agreed.

Sadly due to the nature of our environment, an the billions of pieces of information were subjected to a certain amount of stereotyping will always happen.

People no matter how "free thinking" they wish to believe themselves to be will always go on these generalisations.

Its the same with the whole race issue, personally I believe the sooner were all mixed race then the sooner the BS will stop drawing lines in the sand through distinction and ignorance.

Agree....

"Broken cross": Pangel, many people don't know the origens of the peace symbol, that was designed by and for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, and others tell them that it is really a symbol of the devil, and that it represents the cross of the Christ, broken and turned upside down, and they accept that as an explanation without looking any further....

People can be put into groups, but we cannot project the actions of a few individuals onto all of the members of their group...

Humanity really is like a rainbow, seven colors, infinite shades. and very blurrry borders between them...

actually I dont want to sound smug here or anything- though I will probably be accused of being! but saying if you do this the world will be a better place- stating this itslef- like its a cure to all evils, is a generalisation!

You could make this less generalised by saying that if others (you and I included) stopped generalising the world would improve for the better, but it wouldnt be totally shot of all evil, it wouldnt be shot of greedy, and selfish, and bullies, these people who run a law unto themselves would still do as they please, causing people to worry about them- even if the worry is more localised, it would still be there.

Fact is, we are all creatures of habit, once bitten, twice shy, for example, you walk down an ally and get mugged, would you walk down that ally again? no, why? peobably because you dont want to be mugged again and assume this is a spot where people get mugged- like if you go down this ally EVER again, it WILL happen again. Prehaps a generalisation there?!
Biologically be are also programmed to be hyper aware or to run away/ escape from posible harm or death. If you have a situation where you get mugged down an ally, you feel fear alot when you enter allys for a long time until you can walk down the street properly again. This is because your body has programmed you to stear clear from the bad stuff. It takes time to over ride this. Usually its only because you are aware the not walking down the ally/taking the long route home to avoid the ally, is controlling your life and making things harder than they need to be, so you try to fight against it and reinstall walking down the ally again into your life and have to "fight the fear" by overriding your instincts.

So in all I agree with you in parts, however, I disagree as play this one out: people are terrified others may abuse thier kids (poedophilia) and so are careful with who they leave their children to, and also warn their children "dont talk to stangers, dont go away with strangers" they are telling kids to generalise, to treat every stranger the same- with caution, just incase anything bad happens they tar everyone with the same brush, not oput of malice or irogance but out of fear and caution.

Would you then stop telling these people to be so cautious? would you then advise parents to allow thier children to go off with anyone who suggests to do this?

This is true. Everyone has an opinion but I do believe opinions could be and should be posted without the intent to hate.

Generalisations, and categories bring a polarised view of everything and really we are just one race the human race. We all have these strong opinions that find opposition in someone elses beliefs. There is a good book called 'If you see the Buddha on the road, kill him".

We are one world, one global village and at peace.

People will never get along. Everyone has an opinion. Will you agree that you are wrong to please me? What i have learned is that we are all children who have been left on our own with a note from our parent that says be good or else. After being left alone for too long the children stop fearing the or else and do as they please. We need an intervention from God. Or maybe just a wake up call to ask are you behaving yourselves. Peace.
