First, what kind of procedure are you having done? I am familiar with three different types:

1) gastric banding (i.e., the Lap-Band) - the doctor places an inflatable ring (filled with saline) around your stomach. Very simply, it restricts the capacity of your stomach so that you can't eat as much. The ring can be adjusted as an outpatient by increasing/decreasing the amount of saline in it. This is the simplest surgery you can get (no parts of your gastrointestinal tract are cut), but is also the least effective. It does not require anything special of you except eating a normal, healthy diet. Stomach stapling is the same idea, but is done using surgical staples and a plastic band; so it's not as convenient as gastric banding.

2) Roux-en-Y gastric bypass - essentially, your stomach is cut down to a tiny pouch. Your intestines are rearranged to accomodate the new size, so you lose a little bit of absorptive surface area--but the primary effect is to drastically reduce the size of your stomach. Since the pyloric sphincter (the sphincter at the bottom of the stomach) is no longer inline with the route of your food, everything you eat tends to go through you a bit faster. Certain foods can cause you serious abdominal discomfort and bad cases of diarrhea. You also need to be careful about getting enough protein, vitamins, and minerals. Over time, your stomach will stretch out again (all the way back to its normal size) and occasionally people will start gaining weight again, after losing a bunch early on.

3) duodenal switch - the intestinal tract is rearranged so that your food travels a much shorter route through you--so your absorptive surface area is drastically reduced. Your stomach is also reduced in size, but the primary effect here is to significantly reduce your ability to absorb what you are eating. Your poop will often look a lot like what you ate. With this surgery you have to be even more careful about nutrient deficiencies--basically, you will be drinking protein shakes and taking multivitamins for the rest of your life. The advantage is that it is the most effective of the weight loss surgeries out there. Unfortunately, it is also a technically difficult surgery and is still relatively new compared to the traditional Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. So, there are not that many surgeons around who are experienced with it and a lot of insurance companies do not cover it.

Regardless of what procedure you get, you are going to have to be on a strict diet. For the latter two procedures, junk food (things high in fat and sugar) will tend to cause you significant discomfort and you also need to be careful about nutrient deficiencies. Those two procedures will also cause you to move your bowels multiple times per day.

The thing you need to remember is that weight loss surgery is not a magic cure-all. I've seen people who had these surgeries and lost very little weight. The reason is that they did not stick to their prescribed diets. These surgeries are tools that can help you *a lot*, but losing weight, keeping it off, and staying healthy in the process is still going to require a great deal of self-discipline.

Weight loss surgery definitely works but you have to make sure you get enough vitamins and essential nutrients after the surgery. Since you will be eating less, you have to be sure you have a good diet... or take the right vitamins and supplements. You will definitely lose weight, though.

Good luck!
