I like the asparagus crunchy, but 3 to 5 minutes should be right... unless you really like it soft, then go about 8 to 10 minutes.
I suggest you check at about 3 or 4 minutes and decide whether you want to keep going or not.

We parboil them because then you can watch. Bring the water to a boil, put the asparagus in, watch them closely because as soon as color turns bright green, take them out and put them on a serving plate. It doesn't take very long at all. We like it with a little body and don't like it soft and brownish because the taste is different.
I would say the same for steaming asparagus -- however because there is a lid on it, you can't watch the color.

the time depend on the type of asparagus, but the best option is to do it until they are soft when pinched with a fork
