I shot my WASR-10 for the second time yesterday and somethings not right. It chambered, and cycled every round just fine, The thing is it was kicking the hell out of me! The trigger was popping me in the finger so hard it hurt and the recoil was bad enough to split a sliver of the stock off up by the rear trunion. It also blew my adapter and birdcage halfway downrange near the end of the mag!
I know it wasn't this bad the first time I shot it, I'm serios it felt more like shooting my 91/30!
I did change a few things between the first time I shot and yesterday. They are as follows, I swaped out the Dragunov stock for a standard AK stock (You know, the wood one with the cleaning kit inside), I put a Yugo pistol grip on it, it didn't have a threaded barrel so I bought one of those AK/SKS threaded muzzle adapters off of Gunbroker.com (It attaches by four set screws), and then I stuck a nice birdcage flash hider on it! Can anybody tell me what caused my gun to behave so differentl

Bound's hubby here:

I am not an AK person ... but, it sounds like you have an obstruction someplace in your rifle. I would suspect that the threaded muzzle adapter that you purchased may have been for an AK74, not an AK47. If the adapter (or the flash supressor, for that matter) was designed for the AK74 family of rifle, it would have internal dimensions that would accommodate the 5.45mm round, and pose a restriction when firing the 7.62mm round.

I would remove the threaded barrel adapter and the flash supressor and test fire your rifle ... I think that the recoil and functioning would be back to normal. Also, before firing, carefully check the entire length of the barrel for bulges and splits.

Good luck!

My first thought was you have a weak recoil spring or it's installed incorrectly. This would cause the tailpiece on the bolt to slam into the receiver cover really hard. But this would also cause feeding problems as the bolt moved forward to load the next round. Did you have a lot of jams?

Are you using the same ammo?

Inspect the brass, any cracks or bulges or blown primers indicate a headspace issue.

The headspace issue or the bolt is not locking up properly. Headspace issues don't just show up, so maybe that's not it. You need to check that the bolt locks. At the range, load and operating the handle to load a round then remove the mag and CAREFULLY look to see that the bolt is locked while minding the muzzle is pointed safely. If it doesn't lock like it should, clean the chamber with laquer thinner you may have buildup in there causing the round to not seat all the way in.

My most likely guess is you have a clogged vent and the gas piston is hitting full power rather than the pressure venting off. Clean and inspect the gas system and make sure you have it all back together correctly.

I don't think any of the mods would have affected anything, but explore all options and reverse everything back to isolate the issue.

If none of this changes anything you need expert help, but I think a good cleaning of the gas system, chamber and making sure the bolt, springs and cover are all in place will solve this.

I don't know what was causing the recoil, but the problem with the trigger hitting your finger sounds like trigger slap. Check the link below for how to fix it.

What did the spent brass look like? Any chance the action's not properly locked up and opening early?
