What is the proper way to respond to compliments? I get shy and just smile (and turn away sometimes.. how rude. i know) How about criticism? What is the "proper'' way to respond to it? I get on the defensive side, and ignore them (to prevent future conflict)

How about you? Any suggestions?

When someone offers you a compliment, simply say thank you. It's actually a bit awkward at first, but it really is the appropriate response and you'll get used to it.

As for criticism, that's trickier. If you disagree and can argue your side in a calm manner, great. But many people have trouble with that. We tend to take criticism to heart and respond in an emotional way. If that's the case, saying "I'll consider that," and then moving on is a good way to deal with it.

I tend to respond the same way that you do. I'm trying to do better, though.

When someone compliments me, I try to say, "Aww, thank you! Do you really think so?" or something along those lines to show that I appreciate the comment. If you smile and turn away, though, I'm sure people understand that you're just shy.

When someone criticizes me, I try to say something along the lines of, "Thanks for pointing that out. Do you have any suggestions?" so that, at the very least, I can act graciously and be the better person or, at the most, I can learn something useful and improve myself.

It's hard to do these things, though. They take a lot of practice.

Compliment, very easy; simply smile and say "thank you". Criticism, that is a little more work, however, not impossible. You simply listen constructive criticism should not be painful. And one can always learn something. No one knows everything about anything. And hearing the opinion or perspective of another is very helpful in the process of maturity, it awards a broader perspective. God bless****

For compliments, the best response is "Why, thank you very much!" or "Thanks!"

For criticism, if it is constructive criticism say "I will consider what you have told me very carefully." Or, something like "I will work on what you have told me and try to improve"

If it is just plain criticism like "Your dress is ugly or you're so snotty" A response would be "You are entitled to your opinion. I just happen to disagree." Or, you can just walk away and not acknowledge the comments.

Don't defend yourself to criticism. Just ignore it and seem above it unless it is very valid then just say "Yeah I could work on that" and just smile and say thank you sweetly when complimented.

"Thank you" goes a long way with complements and constructive criticism. For all other criticism I rely on karma.
