I have been unable to find a dog food that my dog will consistently eat. He just does not like regular dog food, point blank! He would much rather prefer human food, but unfortunately I live alone and eat out most of the time so I do not have leftovers to feed him. He is beginning to slim down as a result and I would now like to move him to a high protein meat diet, however, I have been unable to find inexpensive meats to cook for him and my other rottweiler. Are there any meats that I could buy that my dogs would enjoy, and at the same time will not have to spend a whole lot of money. I know this diet will be somewhat expensive, but I am looking for the most economical way. What are some inexpensive meats?

I have heard quite a few people suggest feeding raw meat. How safe is that?

The cheapest meats I have fed to my Danes are beef liver, kidney, and heart. I have bought all three at local grocery stores for less than a $ a pound. I have fed them raw (fresh from the store), and frozen (cut into cubes and frozen into what I call beefsicles). All three of them love raw meat, although my older male doesn't like the smell of the kidneys and won't eat them as fast as the others.

I still feed a dry kibble and whenever they wouldn't eat it, I would put some raw meat in it or some yogurt or cottage cheese on it and they eat it up.

Your dog has got you trained to give him something different when he gets bored of his food. You could do one of two things...
1. Stop switching foods, he will eat when he gets hungry enough.
2. Feed a combination of raw meat, raw bones and raw organs. NOT cooked. Cooking meat changes the nutritional value, and you would have to supplement vitamins and minerals to make up for what you cooked out. Raw bones are digestible, cooked bones are not. It's best to start with an easy to chew bone like chicken.

Chicken is also the cheapest meat, but you should give a variety to ensure optimum nutrition.

I work in a meat shop; what I was once told is to buy normal hamburger, boil it, then drain it before giving it to your dog. They really seem to like it and boiling it rather than frying it in a pan eliminates all the grease. Also ask at your local butcher shop or meat counter if they have any scraps they're going to throw away that would be okay for a dog to eat. you'd be surprised what they can come up with.

Best of luck!!

Your dog is "playing" you and holding out for human food. Find a good dog food and stick with it. A dog is NOT going to starve to death. He will eat when he finds out there won't be anything else. Dog food is specially formulated for dogs and has the necessary nutrients that they need. People food just isn't healthy for dogs. For his own good, wean your dog off people food and give him the healthy stuff.

No dog is going to starve to death. Feed a good quality dog food. He'll eat when he gets hungry.
