I made my appointment online to get my license here in Southern California, it said all I needed to bring with me is: Learner's Permit, Proof of Insurance, and a licensed driver. I brought all three. I am borrowing my friend's car because my husband's car is manual and it's harder for me. Anyway, I went to the DMV and the lady was completely rude to me, she told me I need car registration. It didn't say I needed that so I didn't think to bother with that. The car registration wasn't in the car and I found out it was suspended or expired, something like that. I thought maybe I could still take the test with the proof of insurance, but the lady at the desk said no and to go get the car registered, I told her I can't and it's not my car, it's my friends car, I asked her if maybe the DMV would provide a car for me to use to take the test, because I know in some states they do that, she said no. She asked me where were my parents (I'm 19). I didn't know it was this hard to get my license.

I didn't know it would be so difficult for me to get a license here in Southern California, I see so many illegals driving around with no insurance....I didn't think I would need all this crap just to take the driver's test, my 16 year old sister recently took her driver's test, but in Arizona and it was only 5 minutes long and they didn't ask her for anything like proof of insurance or car registration. Anyway, I don't know what to do now, I don't have any other car to use. Can they do this? Don't they have any cars at the DMV I could possibly use? Thanks.

Why would you need a car registration just to get a driver's license? All you need are Learner's permit, I.D. and SS card in Texas. Why do they expect you to have a car registration when you can't even drive yet, i don't get it.

Honestly i dont know why it is so hard for you to get drivers license b/c if california they are plain stoopid, if they said all you need is what you said it should'nt be so hard for you to get it. I live in Ste.Genevieve Missouri, and all you need is a vehicle of you friends or family to take the test you dont need all of that besides you drivers permit, and another thing is you have to try to park parallel in a small space, i would suggest you move down here or go somewhere else to take the drivers test and then move back to cali or go to another DMV in california to take the test dont feel bad i was 18 going on 19 2 days before my 19th b-day and i past the drivers test, i wish you the best and good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!! with love Amber!!

The first rule of customer service for bureaucrats is to be slow, rude and inflexible to the customers. It really cuts down on the work one has to actually do.

Actually, they can lose their job if they knowingly allow a car on the road for the test that is not legal to operate on the road, not registered or insured.

When my daughter went to take her road test, the turn signals went bad, and the lever broke off when she tried to get it to work. She did the test with hand signals only, and passed.
(This was after 3 years of driving with no license or insurance!)
As you pointed out, it's a pain to get a license in California, because they have about 34 billion cars there.

The reason so many illegals are driving around is because there are about 34 billion cars there. Needle in the haystack. If they get caught, they can't lose their license if they don't have one. Same with insurance.

Yes, of course they can do that. Honestly, it would be entirely inappropriate for a State employee to even get in an unregistered, unlicensed car along with you...let alone, authorize you to drive in one.

You can't do anything at the DMV, pretty much, without a valid registration and proof of insurance. FYI, you not only have to have proof of insurance on the car, you have to show that you, as a driver, are insured...the POI will need to have your name on it.

If you're 18, you probably won't even need to take a class in most states. And the driving test to actually get your license is a joke.

You can go to AZ and get your license and then get it changed to a CA license afterward. You really should just learn to drive the manual transmission car and get tested in it, your making it harder than it is. I drive in Ca and I would feel much safer knowing that people around me had to pass a test before they got a license, so many of them seem like that don't have a clue of what they are doing behind the wheel.

Well that's California for ya. everything, i say again, everything has to be legal with documentation in case there is an accident during the road test regardless where it is in that state. As far as illegals driving w/o insurance, how do you know they're illegal and have no insurance. I think that is a bit stereotypical, did you ask if they were illegal w/o insurance? that's the only way to know even though SO CAL is full of them.

DMV employees are often among the rudest people on earth. They seem to take delight in being rude. It has happened to me repeatedly. But there are also a few nice ones. They probably don't stay there long.

your talking about the DMV; they will take thier time with anything they do, and not to mention make life suck; a comedian once said in the future when everything takes 2seconds; the DMV would still take 10seconds. the only thing to do is to just take whatever they tell you to do and write it down and do it; or else you will just be the passanger.
