Just to say I'm not a spiritualist but my ma is and I've been to spiritualist churches with her.

The obvious answer is 'contacting the dead' but there is more to it than this.

A service consists of prayers and their hymns/songs. They pray for for not only people but the animal and plant kingdom.

Sometimes there are mediums present who attempt to make contact with spirits but sometimes it's just a time of reflection.

If you go and see a spiritualist - Colin Fry/Stephen O'Brien you are not taking part in the religious elements - you are merely seeing a demonstration of their abilities.

I'm not religious but am open to ideas so always find any kind of church service interesting - what struck me about the spiritualist serviced was their sense of peace, sense of serenity with nature and hope for the future. They were not monopolised by talks of ghosts or dead people and it did not make any of the congregation feel guilty about their actions or take a moment to repent their sins.

Being a spiritualist doesn't mean you talk to dead people - it's a faith, a way of thinking or believing. Mediums are the ones who try communicating. Spiritualists believe this is possible.

Traditionally, a spiritualist is one who communicates with spirits. They later became known as mediums. In general, these people are charlatans or self-deluded. There are a number of books which can teach you how to be a successful spiritualist/medium and they do not involve how to talk to spirits as much as how to do "cold readings" which convince the person you are talking to that you know more about him than you do.

There was an excellent South Park on this subject entitled, I believe, The Biggest Douche in the Universe.

Spiritualist is one who follows the spiritual path. One who is religious... the follower of a religion goes to the temple, Church or mosque to pray to God and receive his grace. A religious person primarily believes that God is the giver of all. In absence of his grace... life on Mother Earth would be difficult to live. Hence the prayers and worship!

A spiritualist... a seeker of the spiritual path desires knowing the real essence of life. In the field of spirituality the garb of a human being is just but one sojourn in the life of our soul atman residing within our heart. In terms of spirituality... the life of a human being is not perennial in nature. As the body dies... all is left behind!

It is spirituality that tells us that our soul atman is the real essence of us. It is on its cosmic journey of 8.4 million manifestations. Initially it manifests the garb of an insect, then plant life, animal life and finally the form of a human being. Every serious seeker of spirituality desires gaining enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and salvation (moksha) and the earliest.

The spiritualist knows that it is only after reaching the stage of salvation shall the soul atman within liberate forever from the cycle of birth and death. Reaching the stage of salvation announces one has reached the level of Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ or Prophet Mohammed.

Reaching the end of cosmic life is the goal of every spiritualist. Becoming a man god like Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ or Prophet Mohammed is what every spiritual seeker yearns for. Having gained enlightenment and salvation, the soul atman within leaves for the abode of God, the kingdom of God (aka Baikuntha in Hinduism)... a point of no return! It's not an organized religion as such; it's the belief in spirits and possibly a spirit world, usually with the belief that one can communicate with these spirits through mediums or other methods.

A spiritualist is a medium. I suppose it also could be connected to the theosophical movement.
