There is a common product called Goof Off. Yellow can with red lettering and looks like an older can that had lighter fluid in it. Paint stores and hardware stores sell it. Just remember to test it on an area not normally seen since it is possible it could remover stain and varnish. Use sparingly and find a plastic scraper to assist it along.

Chemical paint stripper works pretty good. Just brush it on, let is sit for 15 minutes or so until it starts bubbling up and scrape it off with a plastic scraper. Use a wire brush to get into the crevaces. It's a dirty job, and the chemicals are nasty, but it's much quicker than sanding.
