Or can it be tested and measured? Has anybody ever scientifically measured it?

I'd disagree with many answers, I think feelings like pain and anger CAN be measured, but love is eternal and therefore cannot.

I liked the definition from Shogun. Apparently this westerner goes to Japan in the time of the Shoguns and learns that they have a word for all the parts of love - loyalty, devotion, passion, etc - but not for love itself. Actually it's more a non-definition a denial of a definition. It's always resonated with me. Sure, love is a great shorthand between lovers but turn around and tell the kid you love them and it's a totally different meaning. I have much the same disinclination to use "God" for the exact same reason. Throw them together - God is love?! - and you have an absolutely unparsable statement that means either something very deep or something completely nonsensical depending on who's talking.

Does pain exist?

Of course it does, but it cant be tested or measured. Some things may be more painful. Like a splinter compared to being shot, but either way there really is no measurement.

Yes, it is scientifically measured quite frequently. In fact it's not a particularly difficult variable to measure, as these things go.

Love is a feeling, you cannot measure feelings scientifically. Can you measure sadness, or anger? It exists the way we create it in our own mind. thats why each person expresses it differently.

To measure something you must be able to quantify it or contain it. Love is more than just a feeling of euphoric glee. Love is a little bit of passion, a cup of intimacy (emotional/intellectual mind you) and a big helping of commitment. That is love.

Never Have I Fallen

Your lips speak soft sweetness
Your touch a cool caress
I am lost in your magic
My heart beats within your chest

I think of you each morning
And dream of you each night
I think of your arms being around me
And cannot express my delight

Never have I fallen
But I am quickly on my way
You hold a heart in your hands
That has never before been given away

Love is synonymous with addiction. There's good ones and bad ones. One goes through withdrawal symptoms when ones love leaves, too. If you want to know if you're in love with someone, imagine how you would feel without them. First time addictions may not feel the same. Love grows stronger.

Does it exist? Live without it and see. Ask someone who has lost someone who has died and ask them what love is. Love, if it is true can not be explained. Let me put it this way, it is as easy to explain love is as it is to measure it or count the stars in the sky.

So you're saying god is like love or "god is love"

that's not a bad definition, when you look at the properties of love as best we know them: Love is all in your head, it has no objective existance. Love is not a person - it has no thoughts, no ideals, and no personality of its own. Love is generally claimed to be a good thing, but people often do some very nasty and evil things in the name of love. Love did not create the world, did not create people, etc. Hrm. Now just replace the word 'love' with the word 'god' in the above sentences about love, and you will see that saying that 'God is love' is actually a statement of strong atheism." *grins*
