I'll attempt to give you a brief chronology of the New Testament...

The 4 Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) represent the life and teachings of Jesus. Along with Acts, which is actually "volume two" of a set, the first being Luke, are the books of HISTORY in the New Testament.

Acts tells us of the beginnings of Christianity. (There were NO Christians DURING Jesus' lifetime. His ministry was spent TEACHING JEWS about how they should live UNDER THE LAW. Only after his death and resurrection could anyone approach God through him.) It tells us of the beginning of the church and how congregations were started all around the "known world" of the time. Acts is the ONLY book in the Bible which TELLS US HOW PEOPLE BECAME CHRISTIANS.

The remaining books are letters to either individual Christians, individual congregations, or GROUPS OF CONGREGATIONS. These letters were written by Paul, Peter, and John, all of whom were apostles, James and Jude, who are both likely sons of Joseph and Mary and thus half-brothers of Jesus, and an unnamed person who wrote the book of Hebrews. The letters combine personal instruction with guidance for living a Christ-focused life. Each letter should be considered in its context, its setting in history and the situation into which it was sent.

It depends on which christian cult you belong to. All of them do agree that it's Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and then Acts but the exact order (and even the inclusion) of the letters can vary by church.

Note that this is not in the order that the books were written. The Pauline letters were first, the first gospel written was Mark and the last was John (the order of Matthew and Luke is unclear).

Depends which Bible. Catholics & Protestants use a slightly different Bible, for example. The one I was taught goes like this:
Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1st & 2nd Samuel, 1st & 2nd Kings, 1st & 2nd Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zachariah, Malachi, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts, Romans, 1st & 2nd Corinthians, Galations, Ephesians, Phillipians, Colossians, 1st & 2nd Thessolonians, 1st & 2nd Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews, James, 1st & 2nd Peter, 1st & 2nd & 3rd John, Jude, Revelations.

There. Wow, I can't believe I actually did that!

More importantly, why are there no books in the bible about Jesus that were written during his lifetime?
