yesterday i took my mini schnauzer to the vet, he said he would call her pregnant. ok. fine. today, i took her to the groomer, who promptly told me she has been breeding schnauzers for 20 years, and that my dog was indeed, not pregnant. she said that since they did not "tie", there was no possible way she is pregnant. how come one person says yes she is, and the other says no she is not. help.

I would go with what your vet says. A Dogs do NOT need a tie to become pregnant (although it is less likely)! I think that if you know when she was in contact with the other dog get an Ultrasound scan. From day 21 to day 28, counting from the first coitus, it is possible to confirm gestation through an ultrasound scan diagnosis. It's much recommended. Or you can wait untli around day 51 for an xray to count fetuses (which is not totally reliable for numbers). My vet said there was 5 puppies (maybe one more) and there were 8!!!

How did your vet diagnose the pregnancy? Palpation? Ultrasound? With both of these a positive result is reliable while a negative result does not mean she isn't pregnant. If a blood test was done, that is very reliable.

A tie is not necessary for a dog to get pregnant. It is preferred among breeders to more likely result in pregnancy than a breeding without a tie.

In early pregnancy, there may be few external signs of pregnancy and false pregnancy is common. I would trust your vet over the groomer.

If you are still in doubt call you vet back and tell them you would like a X-ray done on her, the ultrasound will also work but it is not as clear as a X-ray. The X-ray will allow you to see the skeletons of each puppy inside, so you can count them if there are any. I will cost you a little money, but worth the look. Although it is very natural for dogs to give birth they can have complications during birth and knowing for sure if she is pregnant and finding out when she is due and what to do for her before during and after is very important. It can be a difficult thing to watch your dog go through and knowing what to look for will help you tremendously. Good Luck!!

First of all, unless they watched, neither will know if they "tied". Regardless, that doesn't meen squat. It may be too early for anyone to tell by looking at the dog if it's pregnant or not. However, your vet can run tests, the groomer cannot.

Just a side note....some groomers know more on pet health than a lot of vets! Vets nowadays, are in it for the money and misdiagnose animals, do unnecessary surgeries that never work and run unneeded tests for the $$.

Oh, and one more thing.....

SPAY YOUR DOG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would tend to listen to your vet on this. It is hard to tell during the earliest days after a possible mating has occurred. You did not say if this was an arranged breeding for her and you were watchful the entire time they were together. They can be sneaky and quick at times.

If in doubt make sure she is getting good nutrition for a healthier litter. She'll start to show soon as is smaller breed. Weight gain and changes in nipples will indicate pregnancy. Please keep her vet updated. Some of the small breeds can have problems birthing.

There is what is called a copulatory lock when dogs are mating, the male literally cannot pull out; this may have been what your groomer was referring to by "tie".
HOWEVER I would take the word of a vet over a groomer any day...

A groomer does not have veterinary qualifications and their opinion should therefore not be taken over a vet's - particularly as this groomer's information was wrong. It can indeed be possible for a dog to become pregnant if there was no tie!

I would trust the vet. Why do think the person is a groomer? Its because they like animals but arnt smart to be a vet. A vet is smart enough. Listen to the vets opinion. Did you mention to the groomer that the vet said she was? You should that would be awsome.

Just because they didn't have a tie does not mean that she is not preggers.
But it is a VERY small chance of dogs getting pregnant without a tie, but it can happen.

I would take the dog back to the vet and ask for an ultra sound done then you will know if she is pregnant or not.
