If you are talking about confession, you only need to confess if you have commited a serious sin.
You can go to Confession just for venial sins since it can strengthen you.
Now I am not sure if you didn't have a little Jansenism in your belief. Jansenism was condemned as a heresy. However, it left its influence on thinking of many Catholics. Living in Southeast Texas, I understand many of the Cajuns had a problem with it. They felt it was absolutely necessary to go to Confession Saturday night before going to Communion on Sunday morning whether they had committed a mortal (serious) sin or not. They felt that something was somewhat wrong about enjoying life's pleasures that were not sinful.

You should wear something nice. A nice pair of slacks and nice shirt/blouse would be fine. However, a nice pair of jeans is acceptable. What's in your heart is more important than what covers your body. The left hand goes on top, then you take the Eucharist with your right hand. However, you probably shouldn't take Communion. I'm going to guess you've been away from the Church for several years, right? Because you've been away, you should go through the Rite of Reconciliation (confession) before taking Holy Communion. Otherwise, you would be taking Communion in a false state of mind, and that is a sin.

I believe you are asking about confession...yes, faithful Catholics still make regular Confessions...
Everyone sins every day. Some are worse than others. Some people only have venial ( less serious sins) these are not reqired to be confessed, but some people do out of devotion and a desire to live as holy as possible.
Here is a list of things that MUST be confessed- they are mortal sins: ( the list is aimed at teens- but you'll get the point)

Hatred
Homosexual actions
Impure thoughts
Indifference to good or evil
Ingratitude
Intentional violation of school rules

Yes, most Catholic churches still do this faithfully.
If you are talking about communion, then I am assuming you'd be talking about mass. Most parishes will have mass daily, unless they are short of priests.
If you are talking about confession, some parishes will offer confessions at special times like you described, but most churches will have confessions on Saturdays, usually before the Saturday evening mass.
Of course, one can schedule a confession time with a priest according to one's own schedule. Hope this helps!
Talk to a priest and come back home! You can visit the phorum at my website if you want to discuss anything with some solid Catholics.

You mean confession? If so, my hat is off to your mother. In her old age she still participates in the sacraments.
What does she have to confess at her age? I don't know. You'll have to ask her. Then again, that's between her and God. As for the rest of us, we can all use a good confession all the time because we are sinners.
God bless.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation (or Confession or Penance)is alive and well.
Some go faithfully and others do not.
The very young probably have no serious sin to confess but confession is difficult and if learned while young then it will be easier later in life. I have heard a priest describe listening to First Confessions as being bombarded with marshmallows.
However adults of any age may need to confess sin that hurts their relationship with God and the body of believers, the Church.
The Catholic Church believes that "Only God forgives sin."
When a penitent person asks God for forgiveness, his (or her) sins are immediately forgiven.
Catholics also believe that when someone sins they not only hurt their relationship with God, they also injure the entire church, the body of Christ.
Jesus said, "I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." (Matthew 16:19)
And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them,"Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained." (Luke 20:22-23)
The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation with a priest ordained in the name of Jesus Christ not only reconciles the sinner to God but with the entire church, including you and me.
With love in Christ.
