For the record, people: Germany was indeed a Christian nation. Still is, in fact. They call themselves Christian, they practice several flavors of Christianity, that makes them Christian. To those of you who question their Christianity, I would suggest that not being American does not disqualify them from being Christian. It's not their fault that a single label is used for some 30,000 diffrent denominations.

Because Hitler was cut by Jews as a boy and developed a deep hatred for them and some Catholics who took up circumcision. Most Christians are for baptism instead of circumcision, so Hitler was chosen as a sign of defiance to eugenics by neonatal circumcision. Hitler developed circumcision induced paranoid delusional schizophrenia and took out his subconscious desire to stop circumcision the best way his mind could think of. An eye for an eye, a child for a child. What goes around, comes around. Holocausting, or culling out the offenders. I think it will happen again as the prepucectomists are at it again spreading false statements to urge circumcision of infants.
It was a sign from Mother Nature to stop neonatal circumcision. Too bad She has no voice of Her own like the men who claim to hear the voices of god the father.

Beacuse the Christian churches in Germany openly supported the Nazi state! To this day, elderly Germans will tell you that when they were children during the '30's and '40's, they were told in Sunday school to pray for the fuhrer, and that the swastika flag was flown in front of the the churches and schools. Franz von Papen was in control of a religious/political agenda group called Catholic Action at the time; in exchange for his support of Hitler, he was appointed vice-chancellor. Von Papen took a delegation of Nazi envoys to the Vatican, and on July 20, 1933, they signed a concordat (peace alliance) with Pope Pius XI and Cardinal Pacelli, who later became Pope Pius XII. There are famous photographs of Hitler and Pius XII shaking hands, and of the Cardinals giving the Nazi salute. On Hitler's birthday in 1938, Cardinal Initzer ordered all Austrian churches to fly the swastika, ring their bells, and pray for ther fuhrer. On December 7, 1941, in celebration of their ally's attack on Pearl Harbor, the Conference of German Bishops assembled in Fulda to offer a special war prayer for the safety and success of the German armed forces.

Hitler was able to come to power because Germany was in a big depression and burdened by war debts. Religion doesn't put much food on the table.

Because he appealed to the middle classes who were suffering in a country with spiralling inflation. He blamed immigrants for Germany's financial problems. Blaming immigrants/incomers for a nation's problems is a common political tactic.

1 Late 1930s Germany was not entirely Christian.
2 Not all Christians agreed with his policies (some of them ended up in the camps).
3 The elections were rigged, anyway.
4 The Nazi party officially un-Christianised itself and allowed nazis to believe or not believe in a Christian or pagan God. "Believer in God" was the official term.
5 Put your question anywhere you like as plenty of us are not confined to merely one area of knowledge.

Should we ask this, how lunatic were the people who believe in him. He was psychotic but a genius, As were David koresh, Jim Jones, Saddam Hussein and many others to have people bowing at their feet. Preach to a fallen nation/people what they want to hear, give them what they need (jobs, food, money, hope, faith) and you my friend will fall right in that category as well.
