Some vignettes are mildly funny. The comparisons make the 2006 scenarios seem silly, but the reality is that today's world is arguably more dangerous. In 1956 the pachucos kept their "warfare" in their own neighborhoods. Gang wars and terrorism affect everday people more today. But, one could argue that the Holocost/Hiroshima/Nagasaki and slavery in the US. were the worst terrorrist events affecting or caused by US citizens, which calls the question of: Is today more dangerous than in the past? (Not really to the point of 1956)
As for firecrackers, many more people, especially kids, were permanently maimed and disabled by lax laws on firecrackers in the 1950's. This continues in underdeveloped countries. The comparison to the 06 scenario seems a stretch. Making a mountain out of an anthill isn't the issue. How old is Johnny? Who and where is Dad in this? In short, instead of funny, the stories are pretty sad.
