I got my puppy 3 days ago from a aminal shelter..i'm not sure how old he is but he doesn't look older than 4 months, when we first got him in the house he has horrible diarrhea, but then he settled down. He threw up once but it was just spit, he didn't eat the first day we got him and, i cannot really afford the vet right now. He's recentally not eating or drinking. but, i'm been giving him water unwilingly , He ate yesterday but not today. He's been siting up while sleeping which is kind of odd... My mother said he smells weird,, like infection. but we gave him a bath the day we got him. I just don't know what too do.

You said you got him from te shelter and they usually have staff vets and since it has only been 3 days since you got him I would take him back there and have the on call vet look at him. They usualy have them checked out real well before they go up for adoption but better safe than sorry. Call the shelter now and take it in to be looked at. They can survive parvo with treatment early on. Good luck hope your pup is ok.

Yes puppies CAN survive parvo - but NOT without treatment! It frequently kills young and old dogs.

If you suspect parvo, take it to a vet withut further delay. Even if it isn't parvo, if the puppy has diarrhoea and isn't eating, this is also serious.

If you can't afford the vets right now, getting a puppy was perhaps not THE best idea, as you're discovering. As people have suggested - phone the shelter and see if they have a vet that can help. They should at least cover expenses, as they should not have released a sick, unvaccinated puppy.

Please get this dog treated, you really are running the risk of losing him.

Kyle M - all types of dog can get parvo. No particular breed is immune from any kind of disease.

Take the puppy back to the shelter immediately! Parvo is deadly. Puppies can survive it, but they must have immediate medical intervention. If the shelter is closed take him to the Vet. Please do not delay. Not eating is one thing, but not drinking is very dangerous. Puppies can become dehydrated very quickly, diarrhea and vomiting are not good signs.

Shelters are legally obligated to spay/neuter and vaccinate all animals before releasing them to their new homes. Was this done?

Do you mean Parvo?

No, puppies do not usually survive it without alot of medical attention, which can cost into the thousands.

If you seriously think he has parvo and can't afford to take care of it, return him to the shelter.

take him to the shelter you got him at! it is their responsibility if the dog is healthy and has a good personality when it gets adopted. if the shelter was irresponsible, TELL SOMEONE (a good idea is maybe the mayor of your city or something.) they can make the shelter better and maybe take responsibility and cure your dog! i hope this helps!! ;)

what kind of dog is it. I heard rottweilers, and only 2 or 3 other types of dogs can get it. They can be treated and it is expensive! We had a rottweiler that had it, and it was very expensive, but she ended up living for another 8-10 years.
