a prostitute. Does the Vatican teach this now?

I have no idea what the Vatican teaches. There are no proven facts, but from what I personally have researched I believe that Mary M was NOT the prostitute. I believe she was Mary the sister of Martha and Lazarus and was either the wife of, or close companion to, Jesus...and she was one of the disciples.

The facts are Mary Magdalene was "a great sinner" who had many demons cast out of her.

Traditionally it was believed she was a woman of ill repute because when a woman in Jewish times was a publicly known sinner like that it was usually sexual sins.

Pope Paul VI was right that we don't have hard fast evidence that she was definitely a prostitute. It is part of oral tradition and many of the Church fathers held this opinion.

In any case, it has never been a matter of Catholic dogma so the Vatican doesn't officially teach one way or the other. Making a statement is not the same as proclaiming a dogma.

And by the way, the Catholic Church is not "frightened" of women. The Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene are 2 of her most highly revered and honored saints.

Hope this is helpful.

Pope Paul VI said there is no historical evidence that she was a prostitute. She has been identified by many as the Mary that 7 demons were cast out of. However, we do not have any proof that that was Mary Magdalene and we do not know if the demons had anything to do with prostitution.

I watched a program on the History channel a few months back. It stated no where in the Bible do they actually say that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. The Gospels mention a prostitute, but never say that Mary Magdalene was that prostitute.

The Vatican has stated that she was not a prostitute. An early pope mistakenly asserted that she was in a sermon but that has been corrected. I don't think any Protestants claim she was a prostitute.

From what I understand, the teaching has changed. I recently read about this somewhere but the bible never actually claims that Mary was a prostitute. Go figure......patriarchal systems at their worst I'm afraid. Frightened of a powerful female presence.

I think that has pretty much been shown, that Mary Magdeline, the prostitute, and the woman who washed the Lord's feet with her tears and dried them with her hair are three different people...I don't think the RCC teaches that anymore...

No of course not they believe what they have been taught
They have never research and look for explanations and answers to the evil written in the bible
They believe what they have too so they can be apart of the Church they love so dearly
Until the day something happens and yes the Church will turn their back on them as it has to so many : )
