If you owe money, pay the money now and file for a 6 month extension. If you don't owe any money file the extension anyway. Word to the wise though, whomever you are waiting on for 1099's has broken the law. They had until February 1st to mail those to you or give electronic access to the same document. If I was you I would call whomever it is and ask them to fax a copy. File on time if you can help it. Filing late or with an extension just kind of flags you with the IRS in the future. And yes he can get in trouble if the IRS was ever to send anything to his command, it is looked upon as financial mismanagement and irresponsibility.

If your husband on deployment, you and your husband qualified for an extension.

If you are expecting a refund, you are not require to file Form 4868. Form 4868 is used to pay for estimated taxes due on Arpil 15 (for this year April 16).

If you have any tax questions, you can e-mail me.
