Best invention would be the nail hands down.
It is simple, cheap and reliable.
A screw has much much more complicated manufacturing process than a nail. Nails can be manufactured by a blacksmith if needs be.

If I had to be stuck on an island with a can of screws or a can of nails I would want the nails. Screws can only be effectively applied through the use of a screwdriver or driver. A nail can be driven with a rock if I had too.

The screw is a huge improvement over the nail in terms of fastening strength and suitability in fastening a wide variety of materials, but nails are still used with wood because of how cheap they are to manufacturer and how easily they are installed with air guns.
