Hmm, it depends.
Are you doing any other exercise besides this?
And *can you* really, continuously keep that heavy, big hula hoop going around your waist and hips for an hour?
Those questions are the most relevant, because there *are* better forms of cardio out there you could do, like running up and down flights of stairs, or skipping a jumprope. And it is the cardio-vascular workout that will burn the calories, the fat, and let your stomach muscles flatten and show their tone.
But....if you really can keep that "heavy" hula hoop going at waist or hip level for a constant, continuous hour, and it does in fact have you breathing deeper and sweating, then yes, it will help a little in terms of being weight-bearing cardio for you. But that effort has to be continuous....and fairly high intensity, meaning you have to go fast and hard with the hoop.
And truthfully....it won't work your frontal abdominal muscules as much as it will hit your lateral obliques and hip stabilizers. Not that this is a bad thing--as you lose fat and weight it would give you more of an hourglass figure--but it might not be *directly* what you are after.
At any rate....if you are choosing between this and doing nothing, eating nachos on the couch while watching _American Idol_, then by all means get the hula hoop, *make room* to go quickly with it, and train. Every little bit helps.
Take care, good luck and have *fun*! ^_^

Yea doing anything active for an hour straight with minimal rest is considered a cardiovascular workout, which burns a lot of calories.
It is a fact that you cannot "spot reduce" fat, which means that you will not lose fat in just your midsection by doing a particular exercise (i.e. situps), although your musles there will get stronger. However, you will lose weight all over if you go in to a calorie defifict. It just so happens that many people lose weight in the midsection last so you may have to work extra hard and will lose weight in other areas first to get that area smaller.

It might help a little. In order to lose fat you need to add muscle. Adding one pound of muscle anywhere on your body will cause your body to burn one pound of fat every day. Do squats and push ups on alternate days. Do the easy part twice as slow so that the muscles get tired quickly. Resting the muscle group for 48 hours afterward causes muscle to devekop. Two pounds of muscle will burn 6000 calories every day just by being there.
Cut down on fatty foods, junk food and sodas and you'll lose weight faster. Drink at least two litres of bottled water every day and it will take even more weight off. Add 5 to 7 different raw fruits and raw veggies and you will feel better as well as being in better health.

Ive been reading up on this exercise and so far the answer is yes. 20 minutes a day will help a lot. This can tone your hips, stomach, and thighs. I'm just not really sure how many calories you will burn.

It will definitely chase the love handles on your stomach and sides away. However, if you don't change your eating habits you won't see any results.

it wouldn't hurt, but for best results, do a variety of ab exercises, such as regular crunches, bicycle crunches, reverse crunches, and planks
