The device is generally known as a freewheel but the mechanism is a ratchet as that is how it works.if you strip it down you will find a ratchet inside that rides over teeth and is held against the teeth by a spring.You will see that the ratchet can only pass over the teeth in one direction which allows you to free wheel.

It's called the freehub or freewheel. Used to be that the freewheel was part of the cassette. Now, the cassette slides onto the hub which contains the freehub body.

you can see the small ramps on the piece on top. when you are pedaling forward, the pawls as they are called, catch onto the clutch and pull the wheel forward. if you spin the other way, the clutch just slides over the ramped sections.
