Christians, this may be considered blasphemy, but there are rumors going around in a bunch of books from the middle east that say that Jesus was hung from a tree! The accounts say that the sources are eye witnesses. Is there any truth to this?

Hey hippie hater, I guess you drive a "metal" to work too, right? And I guess you have food coming out of your parents when you sit on the ceramic? I love the way you think. It's so backward it makes sense that you believe a dead man will ride down from the sky on a cloud and take you and the other cultists to heaven.

Theophilia, I agree. Why would anyone read that type of garbage from the middle east. I know you probably don't care for it, but here's my source: Galatians 3:13 (Whole Chapter)
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."

Can you believe people read this crap? Some people actually believe it!

I think the problem here is that early church translators translated the Koine Greek word "Stauros" as "cross". This was to support the decision of Constantine to adopt the cross as a "christian" symbol.

"Stauros" was the word that the bible writers used to discribe the instrument that Jesus died on. These writers were eye witnesses and so, we should think that they would give the best discription of what Jesus died on- all English translations aside.

Koine Greek (and modern Greek too) are very precice as far as language goes. For example, there are 7 Greek words for "love", each one meaning a different kind of love. There is eros, or romantic love, phillia, which is brotherly love- you get the idea. In the same way, there are several Greek words that the writers could have used, if what they wanted to discribe was an upright post with a cross beam. But not one of them used any of those words. What they used was "stauros" which specifically discribes an upright post with no cross beam.

But, you can't blame people for not realizing that Jesus did not die on a cross. Their bibles have been mistranslated to support false doctrines that were added in the 300's by the early Catholic church. Their churches continue to promote those false doctrines... they are completely misled.

There are some honest people however, who, when they are shown what the evidence supports, will accept that for what it is.

The cross was shaped and cut to be from a tree. If you were referring to the Book of Acts that says Jesus was hung on a tree, it is because the cross was obviously from a tree trunk. The only sad thing to that is in the Old Testament, it says that if someone is hung on a tree, he is cursed.
Now, the clean shaven cross is normally drawn by Roman artists because they wanted to make the symbol of the cross be given emphasis for some "powerful occult significance" like the swastika of Hitler and/or the star of David designed by the Germans to simply humiliate the Jews. Do not be carried by the rumors and it is not a blasphemy.

To know the facts look at" Who" had the" power" to put Christ to death. The government of Rome. HE was hung on a roman cross.

As far as reading garbage from the middle east. . . why would you want to?

Um, from what I know about eastern culture, they would take the trunk of a tree as the base of the cross and then tack the people up on it. So yes, it is a tree, but in the shape of a cross.

upright pole.....torture stake...
stauros was translated and there was no evidence that the writers of the Christian Greek Scriptures used it to designate a stake with a crossbeam.
John Parsons wrote a book that stated there is no evidence that the stauros used in Jesus case was anything with a crossbeam..it was a stake consisting of one piece of timber.

The bible refers to the cross as a tree in at least one case. Could it be that since the cross was made from large timbers that tree could be used as a synonym for cross?

Well the special hasn't been aired on Discovery channel or the History channel yet (And they DID show the Jesus Tomb!) So I would have to say the jury is still out on that one...
