Can someone give a TIMELINE of the history of jet fighters, such as what year was the first jet fighter made and who made, it etc;

Jet development really got started in the 1930's By Frank Whitle in the UK and anothe guy in Germany(brain lock). By 1939 Henkel's 280 jet had flown folowed by a Gloster jet in the UK using the Whittle engine. The War spured growth in the tech, and Early ME262's were test flying in late 1942. Hilter wanted it to be a fighter bomber( dumb idea) this delayed the first combat models till 1944. Meanwhile The Gloster Meteor became the first Allied jet fighter 7 was used to shoot down v-1 bombs. At about the same time, GE got the license to built jet engines in the US. They worked with Bell aircraft to make the 1 st US jet, the p-59 Airacomet. Ge has being in the Jet Biz ever since. THe p59 did not go to combat however. The Locheed Co's P-80 were almost ready whenthe war ended in August 1945. Side note on the P80. Dick Bong the top US fight pilot of all time with 40 kills, was killed while testing the new P80 in Aug. of 1945.

As far as i know the me-262 was the first operational jet fighter used in combat and massed produce. But the first ever plane to fly under jet power was the Heinkel He 178, and made its maiden flight on august 27 1939. The He 178 was the first single jet engine aircraft, the first twin jet engine aircraft was the Heinkel He 280 in may 1941, though it was favoured more by the me 262.

The first jet aircraft to successfully fly was the Heinkel He 178 piloted by Erich Warsitz in 1939 (August 27, 1939). The first operational jet fighter was the Messerschmitt Me 262.

If you count jet fighters, you have to count rocket fighters, which were quite popular in WW2. You can't really talk about one without the other.

Just an opinion, continue on.

History Channel had a documentary on "Secret Planes of the Luftwaffe" or something that documented quite of few of the German jets and rocket planes.

While often regarded as the father of modern jet propulsion systems, the young Frank Whittle tried without success to obtain official support for study and development of his ideas.
