I have noticed that the system in our forum has a basic flaw. People answer in a way to please the asker. Is truth always the popular answer?

Very good answers so far. I hope more take part in the question. Basically, at this point we are at a consensus that Yahoo! Answers is not a serious forum for debate. That the point system is not an attempt to uncover any facts, but rather, to uncover popular opinion. Any other views?

***it's more of an outlet for malicious people to promote their views, and punish those who disagree. The TRUTH is, it's a waste of time.

I must say sweet, that last bit rang truer than the other truths that the other answers generally agreed to.

It depends on the question you are answering. If someone is asking for a cake recipe, or what colors look best with dark hair, then the answer is kinda all opinion and the best answer truly is what the asker found to be most useful.

But on other subjects, such as religion, politics, and culture. Most of the questions are not actually people seeking an answer to their questions, as much as people seeking a "certain" answer. and they cater their questions, and pick their best answer accordingly with what proves the point that they were trying to make, not so much on what is actually good, correct, or even in agreement with known fact.

So, I'd say when you are looking for good ideas on scrap booking, wedding planing, fashion, or even math/homework questions, (which I have seen on YA!) YA! is beyond helpful. And, right answers exist. But in the subjects such as politics, religion, those kinds of topics... it's more of an outlet for malicious people to promote their views, and punish those who disagree. The TRUTH is, it's a waste of time.

I don't give an answer unless it is what I KNOW to be the truth or my TRUE feelings about the situation. I do see your point though. I'm sure many people try to give "the best answer" for the points. I'm sure it is wise to just take everything said as opinion and not fact. I do believe that MOST people have good intentions and really want to help.

Before I started answering questions, I read responses for a while. What I saw was a little bit of both when you compared some answers by the same person. I thought of the point system and giving popular responses to earn points and rejected it. I like being me and giving my opinion regardless.

No way! I've found people to be pretty honest. I for one believe in 80% honesty 20% tact most of the time. What you say is part of who you are, your beliefs. What's popularity got to do with that? Self-expression and a chance to do some good! Can't beat that!

That's because people want to be chosen as the best answer to get the 10 points. Under certain topics I think people sway their answer to please the asker, but in other more concrete topics (obviously not one about religion and spirituality) the best answers are chosen because they are more informative and factual. I do see your point. I guess even Yahoo Answers isn't perfect :)

On the other hand, I know that I and others often answer questions knowing that we will not be chosen as the best answer just because we want to share our honest opinion. You have some like me and some that are answering solely to earn points.

When put to a vote - it's designed to uncover whatever the villiage idiot believes. When a "best answer" is chosen by the asker... probably the same thing.

Quote from A Few Good Men starring Jack Nicholson "You can't handle the truth."
Most people in the world reject the truth because it does not serve their purpose or needs. Most people prefer lies as long as the lie does not affect them in a negative way. This is one of the reasons the ship called mother earth is sinking fast!

I believe there is truth to be learned here however I disagree that most people answer the question to please the asker. The anonymity causes a person to be a total jack*ss or as truthful as one can be.

People answer how they answer. I try to tell it like I think it is, but I don't know everything. I give it that 'ol college try.
The asker should read all replies and then formulate their own answer- isn't that point of this?
