Lots. It used to be a relatively common form of execution in Roman areas. Note that it did not always involve nails. More often you were tied to the cross. Crucifixion causes death by suffocation because breathing becomes too much of a strain.

It is one of those things that is impossible to put a number on,the Babylonians used crucifixion long before the Romans did,and so did other civilizations as well.

I don't know. But I do know that the only important one was Jesus's crucifixion. Funny you asked, because we talked about that in school today!

Lots. The Romans used it for anyone that rebelled against Rome. It was their harshest penalty and the message was not to mess with the state.
Interestingly, they usually did not use it for common thieves like the Bible story. It also typically took two to three days to die. And finally, they didn't usually allow the body to be removed. The whole point was it was a message to the living.

The romans did a lot of horrible executions, they impailed people, fed them to lions in an arena, bar-b-cued them . . . crucifixion was another way and lot's were crucified, but Luke 23:39-43 says it all
[39] One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"
[40] But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? [41] We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."
[42] Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."
[43] Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."

I didn't get an exact number out of this, but it was still an interesting read on what countries used it, when, and how:

There is a claim for about 10,000 during the suppression of the Jewish Revolts under Vespasian and Titus.
If that number is at all accurate it indicates much higher numbers throughout history.

We have no way of knowing because it was a common death sentenceat one time, and no known records were kept.

To find the answer, you have to look at the Roman's. They liked this sort of thing and did it to hundreds, possibly thousands...

They crucifed survivors of slave rebellions, like Spartacus and his men so I'd say even tens of thousands.
