Here's what I know: You burn a lot of calories during the first part of your sleep. If you have food in your body, your body will use that first rather than burn fat you have stored. You're better off eating larger high protein meals for breakfast and lunch (protein makes you more alert) and then some starchy carbs with a low glycemic index (look it up) for dinner, so you'll sleep better. I totally understand about the late night craving thing, and I'd say that while not eating is ideal, at least what you're eating, esp. if it's fat-free yogurt without sugar, and some fruit or applesauce without corn syrup, is not a bad choice. I've also heard that a lot of people find that drinking water instead of eating at bedtime will work just as well. Side note: stay away from simple carbs (sugar, white potatoes, sticky white rice, etc) and generally you'll do better. The harder it is for your body to "get at" the carbs in your food, the better (e.g., , less processed or truly whole grain is better than flour and sugar)

I believe your metabolism stops working as hard at around 7. This is when its gets bad for your body to eat foods late at night, but if its just fruit or yogurt i wouldnt worry too much unless your eating a 10 piece bucket of KFC.

If you read about other countries like for example France or China they tend to eat earlier than we do for dinner only because when you go to bed your body isn't able to burn calories like it would when you are awake and say walking, standing or even sitting. Try not to eat before you go to bed seperate it by a couple of hours before bed.

Yes, I heard if you ate late at night and you go immediatly to bed your body does not have time to digest the food adding more weight as you sleep.

Its O.K. to eat yogurt as long as its fat free yogurt, the regular ones have alot of fat and alot of calories. I eat a huge bowl of ice cream before bed every night but I eat fat free frozen yogurt. 70 calories a serving and 0 fat.

It's not that you're gaining more weight, it's that you burn less calories during the evening especially when you're sleeping.
