The basis of the tolerance of Islam is its emphasis on the Oneness of God. It means that The Creator and Sustainer of the whole universe is One; that all humans whether white or black, brown or yellow are of equal status before God; that all the so-called monotheistic religions are basically one, since their origin is the guidance sent down by the One and Only God.

It is true that God in His Book permits fighting, but only as a last resort. This is in the cases of:
Fighting in the case of self-defense.

Fighting to defend the right of everyone to believe in God and practice His religion.

Fighting against brutal oppression and injustice.

The Qur'anic message with the People of the Book is a message of peace. Here is God's commands, which say what means:
*{Allah does not forbid you respecting those who have not made war against you on account of [your] religion, and have not driven you forth from your homes, that you show them kindness and deal with them justly; surely Allah loves the doers of justice.}* (Al-Mumtahanah 60:8)

how about that aya too :
Muslims believe in One God. The God of the Christians and the Jews.

5:69] Surely, those who believe, those who are Jewish, the converts, and the Christians; any of them who (1) believe in GOD and (2) believe in the Last Day, and (3) lead a righteous life, have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve.

the Qur’an does not teach us to hate them. Muslims are to treat Jews and Christians—indeed, all people—with respect, kindness, and justice while making their closest friends and allies among fellow Muslims.

Muslims believe in converting unbelievers just as Christians are commanded by Christ to convert unbelievers.

Some Muslims believed this should be done "by the sword." Others do not take that radical approach. Study Muslim history and you will see examples of both.

Unbelievers, as long as they are not at war with Islam, are to be treated with all due respect as human beings. If they are at war against Islam and Allah, then they should be attacked (only in self-defense) unless they wish to have peace.

Er, they should not be dealt with at all! Live and let live! What gives anyone the right to impose their views on anyone else?
