What works best for anxiety, is resolution of the underlying emotional trauma. Something in your past, is making you excessively apprehensive to stimuli. Competent counseling, can help you get to the root of what you have buried, what you thought was behind you. Your past cannot be erased; it can be de-energized.

Try drinking some chamomile tea. Lavender (in all forms) works. And, as always, the magical combination of B-complex vitamins and calcium/magnesium tablets. I also read "kava" but unsure how well it works. The other items I know are great stress relievers from personal experience.

exercise, to a point. before i went on xanax i would run and run and run until i felt like i was going to die, and it helped a lot, just not enough. yoga, pilates and meditation are also recommended because they're calming. if you're on the verge of a panic attack due to anxiety, deep, controlled breathing (in through your nose, slowly, and as much air as you can, then out through your mouth, just as slowly, until your lungs empty) helps ward it off, for a while at least.
