There's your answer. You answered your own question. A lot of hispanic children are living in the US, learning American. A lot are also adopted by families who might not know spanish.

yes i live in n.m and their is the younger generations that do not speak spanish but understand, the language,and assuming that you are somewhat intersted in the spanish langage maybe you could pickup on some of the easier words, and now days if you can become bi-lingual in spanish if at all possiable you to can get some of the better paying jobs. because of being bi-lingual. give it a try.

Well, you answer the question yourself. Because you grew up in the US.
Nobody is born knowing a language. Either you grow up with it or you learn it. It is not magic.
