I cut and pasted this from the link below:

Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT). This test is designed for individuals who are already fluent in a specific foreign language needed by the military. Quite simply, it tests the individual's current knowledge of a specific language. The test results in a language proficiency rating of 0, 0+ 1, 1+, 2, 2+, or 3, with three being the highest.

So, this is the test where you prove that you do indeed know a language before you are allowed entry into a MOS/AFSC that requires foreign language skills. They test you on reading, writing, and speaking.

Here is a cut and paste from a job listing on an AF assignments page looking for a spanish speaker for an Air traffic controller position:

Control Tower Watch Supervisor (SEI 055) and current Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT) score of 2 (reading), 2 (listening) and 2 (speaking) mandatory. ****THIS IS FOR CURRENT SPANISH SPEAKERS NOT REQUIRING DLI ATTENDANCE***

They can test you at your local MPF or personnel office. This is a common test that is given at every base I've ever been to. I have even heard of it being given at MEPS.

To study for it I would practice each of those three components. (reading writing speaking) Make sure you are strong in your other language. Find other natural speakers to practice with.

Good luck

The DLPT is the Defense Language Proficiency Test that is a battery of tests produced by the DLI....Defense Language Institute.

Currently it is a paper and pencil test but is being computerized to be placed on the Internet. The only places I know for sure the test is available to be taken is at the military academies. However I have to assume that since not every one can travel to an academy it is available else where. You might contact the DLI which is located in Monetary, CA.

How to study for it? It is designed to test your existing proficiency and aptitude for different languages...I don' think you can study for it in the traditional sense.

That's all I have on the subject. Good luck.

No. The DLPT is merely for militia contributors. That does incorporate DoD civilians. the federal government customarily does not use the DLPT to verify language means. as an occasion in case you connect DoS you will take a head to head or telephonic oral examination by using FSI.
