How come God hasn't come down and struck NASA for trying to do the same thing? We've gone up a whole lot higher than those people did.

The people who built the tower weren't trying to explore the upper atmosphere, or outer space -- they were trying to reach God.

NASA is just exploring space, not seeking God.

Good point. Another revealing thing about the bible story is that God punished the people because he was afraid of their power. Most Christians and Jews don't read it this way, but it's quite obvious that this is the case. Gen 11:6-7 "The LORD said, 'If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.' "
Kind of confusing, isn't it? Is God afraid that man is too capable? Did he mess up when creating us?

Also, contrary to popular misinformed opinion, the goal of the tower builders was not to gain entry to heaven but to make a name for themselves. Gen 11:4 "Then they said, 'Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.' "

Isn't that the exact same goal that NASA had, to beat the Russians and prove American technical superiority?

Ditto Tania,
The purpose of the Tower of Babel was to attain heaven by building a man made bridge to it....God made it very clear that man himself can never do anything on his own to get to heaven. Jesus is that bridge and the only way to get to heaven!
NASA just wanted to learn about space.

According to the Bible God's "nemesis" is idolatry. He hates it.

The goal of Babel was idolatry. The goal of NASA is space exploration.

Apples and Oranges.

Is NASA going to the moon to become gods, or as a form of rebellion against God? No... they're just doing it for scientific advancement. God isn't against technology, He's against those who oppose him.

Those who were building the Tower of Babel were doing it as a form of rebellion against God. They thought that if they could get to heaven they could become gods and rule themselves apart from God.

Location, location, location!

Tower of Babel was in the Middle East. NASA is in USA. The God of the bible was a local tribal God in the middle east, he doesn't have jurisdiction over Florida. ;-)

There are many silly stories in the bible, the Babel one is right up there for silliness

their aim was Heaven, not the heavens. they sought immortality and grandure, while NASA is just curious.

besides, the universe is there, why not see it? God made it for enjoyment.

At the time of Babel they caught him off guard. He hadn't had time to move from living in the clouds to living in space...

Since then he has moved Heaven to another dimension. Until we figure out how to make the stargate he and Ra are safe.

The Tower of Babel was to be closer to Heaven and God. NASA is just to get closer to space.

The intentions are different. Unless, of course, NASA is hiding something from us!?!?!?
