A church canon is not a smooth bore artillery piece. Been injecting windowlene again - might have got my facts wrong.

A cannon is a weapon. A canon is an official list. Are you referring to the canon of scripture?? It's the inspired list of the 73 texts that make up the written Word of God. That's what it is used for - to know what texts are inspired scripture and what texts are not. Protestants of course use a partial canon, their founder having decided to throw out 10 books of God's Word, and succeeded in throwing out 7 of them. But the full Bible is still based entirely on the canon finalized once and for all time at the end of the 4th Century, by the bishops of the Holy Catholic Church.
