Depends on where in the south
Louisiana is Jumbalaya with some cornbread!
Other southern goodies are Baked Ham with some Collard Greens, Macaroni and Cheese (not from a box), Candied Yams and finish with a nice Pecan or Sweet Potatoe Pie.

You have all the great answers already, now I'll tell you how to make that wonderful chicken. In a bowl, beat 2 eggs. In another bowl mix 1 cup cornmeal and 1 cup flour and 1 tsp. salt. Preheat a skillet with vegetable oil. Dip the chicken pieces in the eggs, then into the dry mixture. If you want it extra crispy, repeat the process. Put them into the skillet to cook. Enjoy.

For breakfast I'd say Hoppin John, grits, bacon, sausage gravey, biscuits, eggs and juice.
For dinner, I'd say fried chicken, mashed potatos, greens with ham hock, and sweet potato pie.

I'm not truly southern, but my aunt was from Baton Rouge. Best breakfast she ever served me was scrambled eggs with hot sauce and a ton of pepper, and grits with a ton of butter and pepper and hot sauce.
I've been a convert since then, God bless her.
