The wheel chairs are brought to the entrance of the aircraft where the passenger either

1) Gets off and can walk the rest of the way to their seat as they are somewhat mobile

or

2) Is placed in an aisle chair and the airline agents then wheel them to their seat and place them there (when they do not have functioning limbs). An aisle chair is a narrow straight back chair with wheels underneath. It is designed to fit down the aisle of an airplane and is used to assist passengers that cannot walk.

I'm not sure about all people, but I just went to Honolulu and when I arrived at the airport, they took my motorized wheelchair and stowed it in the cargo hold, wheeled my onto the plane in their wheelchair and placed me in my seat. And when I arrived in Honolulu, they returned my chair on a baggage cart where the baggage handlers proceeded to drop it off the cart and break it into three pieces. I will never fly United again. In fact from now on it is strictly cruise ships for me.

when you book your ticket inform the airline. most often you'll have to place the wheelchair in the hold with your baggage and use an airport wheelchair till you get to the plane. and you'll be helped in to a seat, when you get off the other side they should have your wheelchair waiting for you at the aircraft.

thats how we do it at the airport i work at
