I'm interested in answers as they pertain to mental issues, not more tangible disabilities like missing limbs.

Here's what I understand happens: Pvt. A comes back from war. When he can't perform his military job, a physician/physicians determines how much of his pay he receives until the final review comes up with a % of disability.

In the mean time he doesn't report to duty as usual.

By the way, what DOES happen during that time?

You are evaluated by military med personnel.
You may get some leave, but usually, you have to report for duty, if physically able.
Maybe he can't perform his duty, but perhaps there is another duty he could perform. Or, he might be keptin a military hospital ifhe needs acute care or rehab. .
Re' Mental issues, this is one of the most difficult areas to diagnose. If the person truly unable to do his duties because of mental conditions, or is he using this as a copout?
He draws full pay pending the outcome, and is still considered a member of the military and expected to take orders.
