Genesis 4:2
And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit (vegetation)of the ground an offering unto the lord. 4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and his offering.
Adam and Eve have two sons. Cain offers vegetation unto the Lord, and Abel offers aniamals.
Genesis 1:29
And God said, behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which upon the face of all the earth and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed, to you it shall be for meat.

God cleary says that animals should not be killed, in the old testement. So why would Abel the sacrifer of animals get more recognition then Cain.

First of all, God's original plan did not involve the killing of animals...a little bit past that chapter you'll read about a little thing called "original sin." Adam and Eve allowed sin to enter humankind and the world. Part of what happened was that animals now experienced death and were now to become a source of food, clothing and shelter for man. No more peaceful Eden for man and animal.

Abel's offering was taken not because of what it consisted of, but because of Abel's heart. Abel brings the best of his flock - as for Cain, I'm not sure we can determine if he brought his best or not. However, its quite easy to see how warped Cain had become. Jealousy, murder, lying and selfishness are the best ways to describe Cain's character. I don't think it would be hard to deduce then that Cain's offering wasn't coming from the right place.

God preferred Abel's gift because Abel took a life in order to please God. You can't restore a life once it is taken. It is a personal loss. To take a life is hard on a person. The gift of self sacrifice was more pleasing.
It was God's right to choose his preference.
Where does it say animals should not be killed? I have never read anything of the sort.

It refers to the saying that the Lord offered up his only begotten son for a sacrifice. The animals meant more than the vegetation. It was not a sacrifice to offer up the vegetables and it also has to do with faith. He did NOT know that the lamb would NOT be sacrificed when offered, but dutifly offered it anyway. It meant more to him than the veggies to Cain.

Cain was of the devil.
1 John 3:12 not as Cain, who was of the evil one, and slew his brother. And for what reason did he slay him? Because his deeds were evil, and his brother's were righteous.
