Big business? You have never been to a true church have you. Fewer than 10% of Christians tithe their income. Many churches are barely making ends meet. The tithes that do come in are used to pay rent, electricity, water, sewage, heat, maintenance on the building, school supplies, Bibles, pay the Pastor, etc. Churches are not in business to make money. In a true Christian church, almost everything that comes in is used to maintain the church or is given away to charities and such.

Individual Christians pay their taxes as Christ commanded. The church is only a collection of individual Christians pooling their resources to support their faith. This would be like taxing the local community booster club while they raise funds for the community Christmas Party.

Yes there are some big influencial churches out there rolling in dough and yes they don't have to pay taxes, but they should. Whether their members pay personal taxes on the money they spend tithing should not matter because they pay tax on everything else they buy. They have to pay sales tax...

Churches that break the IRS rules by preaching who the membership should vote for are supposed to loose their tax exempt status, but rarely do. Influence has a way of saving them big bucks and helping them get away with many things, including child abuse.

The tele-evangelists are the worst sort of wealthy and they should have to pay taxes too. They use their positions to influence all types of legislature, laws and candidates so they should be forced to pay taxes. But sadly the laws of separation of church and state are rarely enforced, which just goes to show you that churches should be force to butt out of politics!

Its called a non for profit organization.

With that logic hospitals and charitable organizations like the Red Cross that bring in billions of dollars every year would also have to pay taxes.

No profit organizations of any kind are exempt from most taxes. It's not really based on religion.
