Mark Juergensmyer devotes chapter 2 of his book, Terror in the Mind of God, to the "Soldiers for Christ."
In the opening paragraphs of this chapter, he states, "Although much of the world's attention has been riveted to the incidents in the Middle East, I have chosen to initiate my search with a phenomenon that most American readers will find both familiar and strange: Christian militancy in the West. What is familiar is the setting. What is strange is the idea that religious warfare exists in some of the most modern of twentieth-century societies. Also surprising, at lest to some, is that terrorist acts have been justified by Christian principles."
Examples of individuals who are Christians extremist that he goes on to discuss (most of which he has interviewed) include:
- Mike Bray
- Paul Hill
- Eric Robert Rudolph
- Timothy McVeigh
He also takes some time to discuss the crusades, inquisitions, & the battles between Catholics & Protestants in Northern Ireland.
I would very much recommend you read the book.

Actually, the Kool-Aid thing was the Jonestown massacre in South Africa. That was Jim Jones and his crew. As far as I know, there wasn't much of a specifically Christian connection there. That was a personal Jim Jones cult.
The people who were involved in the crusades of the dark ages were certainly Christian extremists.

Jim Jones was not so long ago. Don't drink the Kool-Aid!
How about Heaven's Gate?
Fred Phelps?
The Kingston Clan? Well, at least they haven't attacked yet.
So, basically, there are plenty out there.

The basic belief of their faith is extreme, even if very few are, themselves, extremists. How can every single religion be fake, except for theirs? The human spirit either exists or it doesn't. How can so many of them pray for the world to end? That, in itself, shows how very dangerous and disturbed many of them are. Every Christian is a potential bomber.

Westboro Cult. They protest the funerals of our soldiers and gays. While they aren't blowing stuff up, they have made it impossible to fight back without the defender being sued.
Jack Chick and his Chick Tracks. Nothing but hate and bigotry.
These are the two worst examples I can think of.
